Dominic stood frozen in the middle of the kitchen as Clare stood up slowly, holding her trembling son securely in her arms. The phone was still pressed against her ear, her voice steady and full of authority. Dominic's eyes widened in sheer horror as the realization of what she was doing hit him hard. He scrambled around the kitchen island, his hands raised in a desperate plea for her to stop. The woman in the red dress quickly grabbed her designer bag, looking nervous and deeply uncomfortable as she backed away toward the living room.
Dominic: Clare, please, put the phone down! You are misunderstanding everything you see here!
Clare: I am understanding everything perfectly, Dominic. Step away from me and my son right now.
Evelyn: Don't talk to my son like that in his own home, Clare! You always make a drama out of nothing!
Clare: His own home? I bought this mansion with my own money before I ever met your son, Evelyn!
Clare walked past Dominic toward the front foyer, her hand firm on Leo's back to keep him safe from their sight. Leo was still shaking, his small hands clutching the collar of her brown dress tightly. Dominic followed her closely, his forehead glistening with sweat under the bright entryway lights. He tried to grab her arm, but Clare spun around, her glare so sharp that he pulled his hand back as if he had been burned. The framed flag on the wall seemed to witness the total collapse of their picture-perfect marriage.
Dominic: Clare, she's just an old friend from the office! We were just having lunch, I swear to God!
Clare: An old friend you feed cake to while my son sits crying in dirt on the floor?
Evelyn: The boy was being disobedient! He spilled juice and refused to sit at the table like a proper child!
Leo: Mommy, she locked me in the dark closet! She said I don't belong in this family!
The quiet voice of her seven-year-old child hit Clare like a physical blow to the chest. She looked down at Leo, whose eyes were wide with true fear, then slowly looked back up at her mother-in-law. Evelyn straightened her posture, trying to appear unbothered, but her hands were trembling as she held the other small child. Clare realized with sick clarity that the other child was wearing clothes identical to Dominic's old childhood photos. A wave of disgust washed over her as the final pieces of their lies fell into place.
Clare: You locked my child in a closet while you brought your mistress and second child into my house?
Dominic: Clare, listen to me, we can handle this quietly without lawyers or the press involved!
Clare: You have five minutes to get your mother, your mistress, and your child out of my residence.
Dominic: You can't just throw me out! I am your husband and the chief executive of the company!
Clare: You were the executive because I appointed you. Effective right now, your contract is terminated.
Dominic gasped, stepping back against the wall as if the air had been knocked out of his lungs. He knew very well that Clare owned eighty percent of the corporate shares in her family business. Everything he possessed—his luxury car, his position, his reputation—existed solely because of her trust in him. Evelyn let out a high-pitched scream of anger, stepping forward to defend her son, but Clare held up one sharp hand to stop her dead in her tracks.
Evelyn: You ungrateful woman! We built this family up together, and you want to ruin it all over a mistake?
Clare: Mistreating my son was not a mistake, Evelyn. It was your biggest and final error.
Clare turned on her heel and walked up the grand staircase, taking Leo straight to his bedroom to lock the door behind them. She sat on the edge of his bed, holding him close as he wept into her neck. Downstairs, she could hear shouting, doors slamming, and the frantic voice of Dominic arguing with his mother. The golden life they had built on lies was crumbling down around them, and Clare was determined to make sure justice was served for every tear her son had cried.
