Clare adjusted the strap of her handbag as she wheeled her suitcase up the paved driveway of her suburban mansion in Dallas, Texas. The Texas sun beat down warmly against the manicured lawn and the grand stone entrance of her home. She had just landed back at the airport two hours early after an unexpected cancellation of her business conference in Houston. She smiled to herself, thinking about how surprised her husband Dominic would be to see her. She couldn't wait to wrap her arms around her seven-year-old son, Leo, who had stayed home with Dominic and his mother. Clare pulled her silver key from her purse and quietly turned the lock of the front door, stepping into the grand foyer.
The house was eerily quiet at first, save for the faint sound of laughter coming from the open-concept kitchen down the hallway. Clare pulled her suitcase across the polished hardwood floor, stopping near the framed American flag artwork that hung in the entry hallway. The air inside felt cold, smelling strangely of heavy perfume and expensive wine rather than the usual homey scent. As she crept closer to the archway leading into the sunlit living area, the cheerful voices became clearer and more distinct. She recognized her mother-in-law's harsh tone, followed by the soft giggle of a woman she had never heard before.
Clare stepped past the corner and stopped dead in her tracks, her heart slamming against her ribs. In the center of the white marble kitchen, her husband Dominic stood in a crisp white dress shirt. He was gently feeding a slice of chocolate cake to a young woman wearing a glamorous red silk dress. His mother, Evelyn, sat nearby on a high stool, holding another young child on her lap. Evelyn was laughing softly, completely ignoring a large dark wine stain spilled right across the marble island. No one seemed to notice Clare standing near the doorway, as they were all caught up in their own private party.
Then Clare heard a soft whimpering sound coming from the far corner of the kitchen floor. She looked down toward the base of the white kitchen cabinets, away from the glittering counter. Her breath caught sharply in her throat, her suitcase dropping from her hand with a loud thud against the hardwood floor. Sitting on the cold tiles in the shadow of the pantry door was her son, Leo. He wore a dirty, stained shirt, his face covered in streaks of dust and dried tears. He was clutching his little head with both trembling hands, weeping quietly in total distress while the adults above him continued to celebrate.
Clare: Leo! My baby, what happened to you?!
Clare dropped to her knees right there on the floor, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she reached for her terrified son. The room went dead silent as everyone turned toward the sound of her voice. Evelyn's face turned pale, while the woman in the red dress dropped her fork onto the marble counter. Dominic turned around in complete shock and panic, staring at his wife with his mouth wide open. He took a step backward, nearly tripping over the edge of the kitchen rug as he tried to find his words.
Dominic: Clare, you... you weren't supposed to be home today!
Evelyn: Look at your little beast, Dominic! He ruined the party before you even got to enjoy it!
Leo: Not me! Not me!
Leo sobbed uncontrollably, pressing his small face deep into Clare's shoulder as she pulled him tight into a protective embrace. Her heart burned with a fiery rage she had never felt before in her entire life. She looked up at her husband and his mother, her eyes locking onto theirs with terrifying intensity. The sweet, forgiving wife they thought they knew was gone in an instant. Clare reached into her brown leather purse, pulled out her smartphone with a furious, resolute expression, and dialed her personal attorney directly.
Clare: Bring all the documents. Freeze all company assets immediately!
