By late afternoon, the sun began to cast long shadows across the gated entrance of the Vance Estate. Mark pulled his black SUV up the winding driveway toward the massive brick mansion. He knew Victoria was inside trying to pack up financial documents before the police returned with a formal search warrant. He brought David and two off-duty police officers with him as witnesses.
Mark slammed the heavy oak front doors open and stepped into the marble foyer. The grand crystal chandelier hung overhead, glittering in the soft light. Standing near the fireplace in the main living room was Victoria. She was wearing a silk robe, hurriedly shoving folders and leather-bound ledgers into a large leather suitcase resting on the coffee table.
Mark: Step away from that desk, Victoria!
Victoria jumped, dropping a stack of letters onto the hardwood floor. She quickly regained her composure and narrowed her eyes at Mark.
Victoria: This is my home, Mark! You can't just barge in here with your hired thugs!
Mark: This home belongs to my father's trust fund, which you tried to steal by pushing my wife!
Victoria: I didn't push anyone! Sarah is clumsy and fragile. She fell because she was wearing high heels while pregnant!
Mark: We have high-definition security footage from the courthouse facade, Victoria. The police are reviewing it right now.
Victoria's face turned pale, her confident smile disappearing in an instant. She gripped the edge of the mahogany table tightly, her knuckles turning white. She looked around the room as if searching for an escape route, but David stood firmly in front of the doorway.
Victoria: Your father promised me this house! I gave him ten years of my life!
Mark: You married him for his money, and he realized it before he passed away. That's why he changed the will.
Victoria: That old man was confused at the end! That handwritten note isn't legally binding!
Mark: The probate judge will decide that tomorrow morning at ten o'clock.
Victoria let out a bitter laugh and stepped closer to Mark. Her dark eyes flashed with pure malice. She tilted her head, her voice dropping to a low, cold whisper that sent a chill through the quiet room.
Victoria: You think you've won, don't you? You always were your father's favorite little boy. But you don't have the stomach for real power, Mark. You're soft, just like Sarah.
Mark: Being honest isn't weakness, Victoria. And protecting my family is something I will do until my last breath.
Victoria: We'll see what the judge says when my lawyers present the signed prenup modification!
Mark: You mean the document you forged last month? The forensic experts already confirmed the signature is fake.
Victoria gasped, taking a quick step backward. She lost her footing slightly on the edge of the rug and caught herself on the sofa. Mark did not move a muscle. He watched her with steady, calm eyes. He was no longer the angry young man who had rushed down the courthouse steps; he was now a father ready to protect his family's legacy with absolute resolve.
