The sound of approaching police sirens echoed softly from the long driveway outside.
Chloe stepped forward, her hands reaching out in a desperate attempt to explain.
"Mark, please, you cannot ruin our future over a maid," Chloe cried out desperately.
Evelyn sat quietly on the bench, holding a warm cup of water offered by a gardener.
Mark turned away from Chloe and walked directly toward his private office door.
He unlocked the heavy wooden door and opened the wall safe behind his desk.
He pulled out a thick leather folder containing legal papers and historical deeds.
Mark walked back into the foyer, carrying the official documents in his hands.
"You always thought Evelyn was just hired help in this mansion," Mark said softly.
Chloe looked confused, wiping away her own nervous tears with her manicured nails.
"She is just the housekeeper," Chloe replied, her tone still tinged with subtle contempt.
Mark opened the leather folder and displayed the legal property deed clearly.
"Thirty years ago, my grandfather lost everything in a terrible financial crash," Mark explained.
"It was Evelyn who used her entire life savings to keep this estate saved from foreclosure."
Chloe stared at the official notary seals and signature lines on the old document.
Evelyn's legal name was listed as the co-owner and primary life-trust beneficiary of the property.
"My grandfather made sure this house would legally protect her for the rest of her life," Mark added.
"She chose to work here because she loved this home, not because she had to."
Chloe's face drained of all color as the weight of her mistake hit her.
She had spent weeks abusing the actual owner of the luxury mansion she craved.
