a whisper in the dark

She Escaped The Mansion Only To Enter Her Father's Trap

The bedroom door locked from the outside with a click.

Jillian sat on the edge of the large mattress quiet.

Her feet were bruised and dirty from the gravel run.

She refused to cry because weeping would solve nothing now.

She needed a way to contact her father's original lawyer.

The room had no landline telephone or computer inside it.

The high windows were locked tight with thick steel frames.

Around noon, a knock came at the bedroom door.

The handle turned and a maid walked in carrying food.

It was Sarah, the young maid who worked the kitchen.

Sarah looked around nervously before closing the door halfway behind.

Sarah: Miss Jillian, are you alright in here?

Jillian: Sarah, please help me get out of here.

Sarah: Mr. Arthur ordered everyone to stay away from you.

Jillian: He is hurting my father with bad medication!

Sarah stopped and looked down at the silver tray she held.

Her hands trembled so hard the water glass rattled loudly.

Sarah: I saw the doctor put liquid in his tea.

Jillian: You saw him do that with your own eyes?

Sarah: Yesterday morning in the small private kitchen downstairs.

Sarah: I saved the small glass bottle from the trash.

Jillian stood up quickly and grabbed Sarah's soft arm.

Jillian: Where is that bottle right now, Sarah?

Sarah: I hid it inside my apron pocket in my room.

Jillian: We need to get that bottle to the police.

Sarah: The guards check our bags every evening at five.

Jillian looked toward the wall clock ticking on the desk.

It was already twenty minutes past two in the afternoon.

They had less than three hours to make a move.

Jillian: Do you have a personal phone hidden somewhere?

Sarah: My phone is in the staff room on the floor.

Jillian: Can you call attorney Marcus right now?

Sarah: I do not have his private phone number, Miss.

Jillian remembered the old business card in her dad's coat.

His favorite winter jacket was hanging in the hall closet.

Jillian: I know where the card is kept downstairs.

Sarah: The main hall is guarded by two men today.

Jillian: We have to create a distraction right away.
