Without slowing down, Sarah rushed toward the man.
Before anyone could react...
She slapped him across the face with all her strength.
The loud crack echoed through the shopping mall.
The stranger stumbled backward in complete shock.
His grip loosened just enough for Lily to break free and run straight into her mother's arms.
Sarah wrapped both arms around her daughter as tightly as she could.
Lily buried her face against her mother's shoulder, shaking uncontrollably.
Sarah glared at the man.
"Take your hands off my daughter!" she shouted.
The entire hallway fell silent.
The stranger rubbed his bright red cheek and looked around at the crowd.
"You're making a scene," he complained. "I was just being friendly."
Nobody believed him.
Parents in the crowd exchanged worried looks.
Several people had already begun recording everything on their phones.
Mall security officers started running toward the growing crowd after hearing the shouting.
Sarah refused to let go of Lily.
She gently brushed the little girl's hair away from her face.
"Did he hurt you?" she whispered.
Lily shook her head through tears.
"He grabbed me... I told him I wanted my mommy."
Sarah felt her stomach twist.
The stranger continued insisting that everyone had misunderstood his intentions.
He claimed he had only been trying to help a lost child.
But witnesses quickly began speaking up.
One woman said she had watched him ignore Lily's cries.
Another shopper admitted he saw the man pulling the child away while she repeatedly tried to escape.
Every new witness made the stranger's explanation sound less believable.
Within moments, mall security surrounded him.
Someone had already called the police.
The man realized he was no longer in control of the situation.
And the crowd was no longer willing to stay silent.
