Mommy, I Don't Know Him!

Saturday afternoons at Westbrook Mall were always busy. Families wandered through clothing stores, children laughed near the indoor fountain, and shoppers filled every corridor with the sounds of conversation and shopping bags.

For Sarah Mitchell, it was supposed to be a simple afternoon with her six-year-old daughter, Lily.

The two had spent the morning picking out school supplies and promised to stop for ice cream before heading home. Lily happily skipped beside her mother, wearing a bright pink dress and clutching her favorite stuffed bunny.

As they entered one of the larger department stores, Sarah's phone vibrated.

It was only a quick call from her sister.

Sarah glanced away for no more than thirty seconds while standing beside a display of backpacks.

When she turned back...

Lily was gone.

A wave of panic rushed through her body.

"Lily!" she shouted, looking around frantically.

Customers stopped and stared as Sarah ran through nearby aisles.

Then she heard it.

A frightened little voice echoed across the mall.

"Mommy! I don't know him!"

Sarah's heart nearly stopped.

She followed the scream into the central hallway where dozens of shoppers had gathered.

Standing in the middle of the crowd was a man in a black business suit.

His hands tightly gripped Lily's arms as she cried uncontrollably.

She struggled to pull away from him, but he refused to let go.

Tears streamed down her face as she continued screaming for her mother.

Several shoppers watched the disturbing scene.

Some whispered.

Some took out their phones.

But nobody stepped forward.

The man looked calm despite the chaos around him.

He smiled down at the frightened little girl as if nothing unusual was happening.

Sarah pushed through the crowd with every ounce of strength she had.

She could hear Lily crying.

She could see the fear in her daughter's eyes.

And she knew exactly what she had to do.
