Damian grabbed the heavy steel bar with both hands and lifted it out of the mounting brackets with a sharp metallic clatter. He grabbed the rubber handle and pulled the heavy door open, stepping into the warm space beyond the threshold. The air inside was thick and hot, ringing with the loud noise of pumps and cooling fans spinning at full speed. Bright yellow overhead lamps cast harsh shadows across the maze of silver pipes and high-voltage wiring panels running along the bulkheads.
Sitting on a small metal folding chair near the back of the chamber was his elderly mother Evelyn. She wore a thin beige dress and held her hands tightly around her arms to keep from trembling in the hot draft. Her hair was pulled back messy, and her face looked pale and exhausted under the glare of the work light hanging above her head.
Damian: Mom! Oh my God, Mom!
Damian rushed across the steel grating floor and dropped to his knees right in front of his mother's small chair. He reached out and grabbed her cold hands, holding them tight between his own palms to comfort her.
Evelyn: Damian... I knew you would come look for me, son.
Damian: How did you get down here? Who did this to you?
Evelyn: Victoria asked me to help her check a storage crate down here before the guests arrived for lunch. When I stepped inside, she shut the heavy door behind me and dropped the lock bar across the latch.
Damian: She locked you in the engine room on purpose?
Evelyn: She told me through the small hatch window that I was going to sign the property release forms today. She said we were not returning to the shore until I signed over full legal control of the family estate and the shipping accounts to her name.
Tears filled Damian's eyes as anger surged through his chest. He looked at his weak mother, who had built their family legacy through decades of hard work, sitting helpless in a dark mechanical room like a prisoner. He lifted her gently by her elbows and helped her stand up from the small metal chair.
Damian: Can you walk, Mom? We are getting out of here right now.
Evelyn: I am weak, Damian, but I can walk if you hold onto me.
Damian unclipped the handheld walkie-talkie radio from his belt loop and pressed the side button firmly with his thumb while holding his mother close against his side.
Damian: Captain, lock the bridge! Call the Coast Guard right now!
The radio crackled back instantly with the sharp, clear voice of the ship's captain over the small speaker.
Captain: Sir? What is happening down there?
Damian: Victoria has committed a serious crime on board this vessel! Lock the helm controls immediately and head straight back toward the Miami port authority dock!
Captain: Understood, Mr. Vance. Locking down the bridge controls right now and contacting the authorities on channel sixteen.
Damian held his mother steady as they stepped through the heavy doorway back into the lower hallway, heading directly toward the stairs.
