Begging For Mercy

Ethan took three steps closer to Clara, his hands trembling violently as he fell to his knees on the polished wood floor.

Ethan: Clara, please... I’m begging you. Don't do this to us!

Clara: What did I tell you last night at the ballroom, Ethan?

Ethan: You said... you said tomorrow I’d be begging for your forgiveness.

Clara: And here you are, right on schedule, on your knees on my foyer floor.

Victoria: Clara, he’s your husband! You can't put your own husband in prison!

Clara: Husband? The divorce papers were prepared by Mr. Harrison two hours ago.

Lawyer: Here are the documents, Mr. Vance. Miss Montgomery is filing for an immediate annulment on grounds of fraud and assault.

Ethan: An annulment?! Clara, we can fix this! We can go to marriage counseling!

Clara: You didn't care about our marriage when you tried to steal my father's twenty-million-dollar estate.

Victoria: It was my idea, okay?! Blame me, Clara! Don't ruin my son's entire future!

Clara: Oh, don't worry, Victoria. I have plenty of blame reserved just for you.

Victoria: What do you mean? What else could you possibly take from me?!

Clara: Your luxury beach house in Malibu and your penthouse apartment in Manhattan.

Victoria: Those properties belong to me! I bought them ten years ago!

Clara: You bought them using mortgage loans guaranteed by my father’s corporate holdings.

Victoria: You wouldn't dare foreclose on my personal residences!

Clara: The foreclosure notices were sent to the county clerk at eight o'clock sharp this morning.

Victoria gasped, leaning heavily against the grand entryway archway as tears started smudging her heavy makeup.

Victoria: You’re a cold, heartless monster, Clara!

Clara: I learned from the best, Victoria. You watched your son bruise my face last night and didn't even blink.

Ethan: Clara, look at me! I’m sorry! I’ll give back every single penny from the offshore accounts!

Clara: You don't have a choice about giving it back, Ethan. The federal financial crimes unit already seized those accounts.

Ethan: Federal financial crimes unit?! You reported this to the federal authorities?!

Clara: Wire fraud across state lines carries a mandatory minimum federal prison sentence of ten years.

Ethan buried his face in his hands, sobbing openly as he realized his life was completely over.

Victoria: Clara, please! We will leave the state! We will never speak your name again! Just drop the charges!

Clara: I told you last night that you would beg, Ethan. But I never promised I would forgive you.

Ethan: Please, Clara! Have some mercy on us!

Clara: Did you show me mercy when you threw me against that oak desk in your office?

Ethan stayed silent, unable to look her in the eyes.

Clara: That’s what I thought. Harrison, call the police department and tell them the suspects are currently on the premises.
