A sudden movement broke the terrible standoff on the balcony. Marcos, the family's long-time gardener, rushed out from the side path near the manicured lawn. Seeing the little girl hanging over the edge, Marcos sprinted up the wide back stairs four steps at a time. He burst onto the upper deck, dropped his heavy shears, and scooped Lily up over the stone railing in one swift motion. He pulled both children safely onto the cool floor away from the ledge. Lily cried loudly, clinging tightly to Toby's neck. Toby wrapped his aching arms around his sister, shivering uncontrollably as his adrenaline began to fade away into deep shock.
Marcos: Are you okay, little ones?
Toby: We are okay, Marcos. Thank you.
Richard stepped forward quickly, trying to reach down toward Toby and Lily, but Toby pulled away immediately. The young boy glared at his father with a look of pure betrayal. Evelyn stood nearby with her arms crossed over her chest, a faint look of annoyance on her face. She tapped her designer shoe against the marble floor, completely unbothered by how close a tragedy had just been. Marcos stood between Richard and the kids, his face grim as he looked at his employer with utter disappointment. The heavy silence that followed was suffocating, filled with unspoken questions that needed real answers.
Richard: Toby, son, let me check on you both.
Toby: Stay away from us, Dad!
Evelyn: Don't speak to your father like that, you spoiled brat!
Toby: You told him to let her drop! I heard you!
Richard opened his mouth to deny it, but no words came out of his mouth. His jaw tightened as he looked down at his shoes, unable to meet his young son's fierce gaze. For years, Richard had built a massive fortune in Texas real estate, buying up luxury properties across Dallas. But inside his own house, he had slowly surrendered all his power to Evelyn. She had married him three years ago, shortly after Toby and Lily's biological mother passed away. Ever since then, Evelyn had been trying to erase the children from Richard's life, pushing her own adult son, Julian, into the family business instead.
Toby: Why didn't you help us, Dad?
Richard: You don't understand how complicated things are, Toby.
Toby: There is nothing complicated about saving my sister!
Toby stood up, holding Lily firmly by the hand as they moved toward the glass doors. Marcos walked closely beside them, making sure they were completely safe from any more danger. As Toby passed his father, he saw a thick leather folder sitting on the outdoor table. Inside was a legal document stamped with the words Last Will and Testament. The top page listed the Dallas mansion, the family trust fund, and all company stock being transferred immediately to Evelyn and Julian. Toby realized in that terrible second why Evelyn wanted them out of the picture. Her plan was nearly complete, and his father was letting it happen.
