The bright Texas sun beat down on the wide marble balcony of the Dallas mansion. Outside, the air was warm, carrying the scent of cut grass and expensive blooming flowers. Inside the air-conditioned halls, a sudden sound shattered the quiet morning. Eight-year-old Toby heard a faint cry coming from near the balustrade. He sprinted out onto the smooth stone terrace just in time to see his two-year-old sister, Lily, slipping through the carved pillars. Her little sandals dangled over the edge above the steep concrete driveway below. Without thinking twice, Toby dropped to his knees and lunged forward, grabbing her tiny wrists with both hands. His fingers locked tightly around her soft skin as her weight suddenly pulled down against his small arms.
Toby: DON'T PULL HARD! JUST HOLD MY HAND!
Toby gritted his teeth, his face turning red under the hot sun. Tiny beads of sweat popped up on his freckled nose as he dug his sneakers into the cracks between the floor tiles. He could feel the terrible pull of gravity trying to snatch his little sister away. Below them, the stone driveway looked cold and unforgiving. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. Every single muscle in his back screamed from the sudden strain, but he refused to loosen his grip even a tiny bit.
Toby: HOLD ON, LIL' SIS!
Suddenly, the heavy glass double doors snapped open behind him. Toby's father, Richard, rushed out onto the balcony, his face pale with utter panic. Richard looked frantically from Toby down to the little girl hanging over the drop. But instead of immediately reaching over the railing to pull Lily up to safety, Richard froze in his tracks. His hands hovered in the air, trembling violently. He glanced back toward the doorway where his new wife, Evelyn, stepped out into the daylight. Evelyn adjusted her diamond bracelet calmly, her eyes cold as ice as she stared down at the struggling children. She didn't move a single step closer to help them.
Richard: LET GO OF HER NOW!
Toby: NO! SHE WILL FALL!
Toby looked up at his father with complete disbelief in his eyes. He thought his dad would reach down and save them both instantly. Instead, his father stepped back half an inch, his eyes darting toward Evelyn as if asking for permission to act. Toby felt his hands slipping an inch off Lily's slippery wrists. The weight of his little sister was becoming too heavy for an eight-year-old boy to hold alone much longer. Tears of anger and terror pooled in his wide brown eyes, blurring the sight of his father's expensive leather shoes.
Richard: DO WHAT I SAY!
Evelyn: LET HER DROP, YOU FOOL!
Toby: YOU CANNOT MAKE ME!
Toby screamed with every bit of power left in his lungs. He shifted his weight backward, dragging his belly flat against the hot marble floor. He squeezed Lily's wrists tighter, ignoring the painful burn spreading down his arms. He knew that if he let go, his baby sister would be gone forever. He could not understand why his father was listening to Evelyn instead of grabbing Lily's arms. The cruel coldness in his stepmother's voice chilled him to his core despite the scorching Texas afternoon heat. He held on with every ounce of strength left in his small body.
