As soon as the heavy garage door closed, Vanessa walked into the sunlit living room with an angry look on her pale face. Little Leo was sitting on the polished floor playing with a wooden block, making tiny soft noises. Vanessa scoffed loudly and grabbed the helpless baby by his small left arm. She dragged him across the smooth floor toward the corner because he was making too much noise while she tried to talk on her cell phone.
Baby Leo began crying hysterically, his small face turning red from the sharp pain and utter surprise. He reached out his tiny hands for help, but Vanessa just yelled at him to shut his mouth. Sarah ran out of the quiet kitchen with a white cleaning towel in her trembling hands, her heart breaking at the terrible sight. She could not stay silent any longer while a small innocent baby was being treated so cruelly right in front of her eyes.
Sarah: Please stop, ma'am! You are hurting his arm! He is just a little baby!
Vanessa: Shut your mouth and go back to the kitchen, Sarah! Mind your own business!
Sarah: I cannot let you do this to him anymore! It is wrong!
Vanessa: If you say one more word, I will call the police and say you stole my diamond ring!
Sarah fell to her knees on the cold floor, covering her face with her hands as tears began streaming down her smudged cheeks. She wept distressfully because she felt so powerless against her rich employer. Vanessa laughed meanly and tossed the sobbing baby onto the sofa, returning to her long phone call with a rich friend. Sarah knew she had to make a dangerous choice between her own safety and saving this innocent child from more harm.
While Vanessa was busy talking and drinking iced tea on the back patio, Sarah quietly crept into the main hallway near the house telephone. Her hands shook violently as she lifted the heavy phone receiver and dialed David's private cell number. She knew this call could ruin her entire life, but she could not live with the guilt of doing nothing. The phone rang three times before David's deep, confident voice answered from his office downtown.
David: Hello, this is David. Is everything okay at the house?
Sarah: Sir... please come home right now! Please, you have to hurry!
David: Sarah? What is wrong? Is Leo sick?
Sarah: No, sir! It is Mrs. Vanessa! Please, just come back before it is too late!
Before Sarah could explain any further, she heard Vanessa's heavy designer high heels clicking down the hallway toward the kitchen. Sarah quickly slammed the phone down and wiped her wet face, grabbing her mop to pretend she was working hard. David was left staring at his silent phone in his grand office building, his mind racing with sudden deep worry. He canceled his important afternoon meeting immediately and sprinted toward his luxury car parked outside.
