Mark sat at the dark wooden kitchen table inside his sunny suburban home.
The bright morning sun streamed through the wide glass windows of the house.
He inhaled the sweet warm aroma of freshly brewed Earl Grey tea.
His wife Sarah stood right near the gleaming granite kitchen counter.
She kept her back turned while carefully wiping down the clean surfaces.
Their seven year old daughter Lily was quietly playing with small wooden blocks on the rug.
Mark reached out his right hand to lift the painted porcelain cup.
He brought the warm steamy cup directly toward his open mouth.
Suddenly young Lily stopped playing with her colorful wooden toy blocks.
The little girl stood up very quickly on the soft living room carpet.
Her big brown eyes widened in sudden overwhelming panic and deep fear.
Lily: Daddy, don't drink it!
Mark froze immediately in place with the rim resting against his lip.
He looked over the small rim of the porcelain tea mug in confusion.
Mark: What is wrong honey?
Lily pointed her tiny trembling index finger straight across the large open room.
She pointed directly at Sarah who had suddenly turned completely still and quiet.
Lily: Mommy put chemicals in it!
Mark slowly lowered the heavy warm cup down onto the wooden surface.
A thick silent tension suddenly filled the entire bright kitchen space.
Mark: What did you just say sweetie?
Lily: Give it to her first Daddy!
Sarah let out a loud forced laugh that sounded completely unnatural and tense.
She quickly placed her wet kitchen cloth onto the cold stone counter.
Sarah: Oh don't listen to her crazy imagination Mark.
She took two small cautious steps toward the kitchen dining table.
Sarah: She watched a scary movie at school yesterday afternoon.
Mark looked closely down into the dark swirling liquid in his cup.
He noticed a very light strange pale film floating near the top surface.
A tiny cold shiver instantly ran down his long straight spine.
Mark: Lily is not the type of child to tell stories like this.
Sarah: Are you seriously taking the word of a child over your own wife?
Mark looked deeply into Sarah's pale blue panicked eyes across the table.
He held the warm handle of the cup firm in his strong hand.
Mark: If there is nothing wrong then you take a small sip right now.
Sarah stared right back at him without saying a single quick word.
Her face lost every single bit of its warm natural summer color.
She lunged forward across the wooden table with sudden desperate speed.
Her hand struck the delicate handle of the expensive blue mug hard.
The porcelain cup shattered instantly across the hard oak floor below.
Dark brown tea splashed everywhere across the light beige floor tiles.
Mark stood up so fast his heavy wooden chair fell straight backward.
Mark: What on earth did you just do Sarah!
Sarah: It was an total accident Mark I panicked because you doubted me!
Lily began to cry softly behind the plush floral living room couch.
Mark backed away slowly while staring directly into Sarah's guilty pale eyes.
He realized in that exact terrifying moment that his life was in real danger.
