Three months after the disastrous dinner at the Sterling mansion, the morning sun shone brightly into a high-rise courtroom in downtown Chicago. Clara sat at the prosecution table, wearing a crisp black blazer and dark navy trousers. Her red hair was styled neatly, showing no trace of the humiliation she had suffered months ago.
Beside her sat her father, Jonathan Miller, reviewing a stack of legal documents. Across the aisle, Mark sat in an orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to his waist belt. His hair was messy, his eyes hollow, and his previous arrogance completely gone.
Judge Vance: Mr. Sterling, you have pleaded guilty to charges of felony assault, battery, and unlawful restraint. Do you have anything to say before I pronounce your sentence?
Mark: Your Honor... I am deeply sorry for my actions. I let my anger get the better of me, and I deeply regret hurting Clara.
Jonathan: Your Honor, if I may speak on behalf of the victim?
Judge Vance: You may, Mr. Miller.
Jonathan stood up, casting a commanding presence over the courtroom as he adjusted his buttoned suit jacket.
Jonathan: The defendant did not just lose his temper, Your Honor. He systematically attempted to intimidate and control my daughter, believing his family's wealth made him immune to the law. The video evidence clearly shows premeditation and sheer cruelty.
Judge Vance: The court has thoroughly reviewed the video footage, Mr. Miller. The severe lack of remorse shown during the incident is deeply concerning.
Mark looked back at his mother, Eleanor, who was sitting in the front row of the gallery. She was crying softly into a tissue, wearing a simple cloth dress instead of her usual designer attire.
Judge Vance: Mark Sterling, I sentence you to three years in state prison, with no possibility of early parole. Furthermore, a permanent ten-year restraining order is granted for Clara Miller.
Mark: Three years?! Your Honor, please! I've never been to prison before!
Judge Vance: Then you will have three years to reflect on how to treat human beings with respect. Bailiff, remand the defendant into custody.
The bailiff grabbed Mark by his arms, hauling him up from his seat. Mark turned to look at Clara one last time, his voice cracked with desperate tears.
Mark: Clara! Please! Forgive me! I still love you!
Clara didn't say a word. She simply watched as the doors behind the judge's bench opened, swallowing Mark into the state correctional system.
Jonathan: You handled that with incredible grace, Clara.
Clara: Thank you, Dad. I just want this chapter of my life to be over.
As they walked out of the courtroom, Eleanor Sterling rushed up to them in the hallway, her face pale and exhausted.
Eleanor: Clara! Clara, please wait!
Jonathan: Mrs. Sterling, do not approach my client or my daughter.
Eleanor: I'm not here to fight! I... I just wanted to tell you that Arthur's company went bankrupt last week. We lost the mansion. We lost everything.
Clara: You didn't lose everything because of me, Mrs. Sterling. You lost everything because you enabled a monster and valued status over basic humanity.
Eleanor: We have nothing left... how could you be so heartless?
Clara: Heartless? You sat at that dining table and watched your son pour scalding food on my head, and your only concern was your thirty-thousand-dollar rug.
Eleanor stood frozen, unable to form a response as Clara turned her back on her and walked toward the courthouse elevators.
