David stepped out of the bedroom, his heavy footsteps echoing off the hard surfaces of the sunlit living room. Richard did not even turn around at first, keeping his back to his son as he took a slow sip from a crystal glass of water. Eleanor, however, adjusted her posture immediately, putting on a smooth, practiced smile that did not reach her cold gray eyes. She smoothed down her silk blouse with polished nails, acting as though she were simply visiting a casual friend for afternoon tea.
David: Which one of you touched my wife?!
Eleanor: Son, lower your voice. There is no need for such dramatic shouting in this house.
David: Look at me, Eleanor! Look me in the eye and answer my question!
Richard: Mind your tone when speaking to your mother, David. You are behaving like a child.
David: She is not my mother! And she put her hands on my pregnant wife!
The silence that followed was heavy and dangerous. Eleanor took a small step forward, her high heels clicking softly against the floorboards. She shook her head with a look of fake sympathy, looking back toward the bedroom door where Sarah was still sobbing quietly into her robe. Eleanor raised a hand to her chest, sighing softly as if she were carrying the weight of a painful secret that David was too blind to see.
Eleanor: David, darling... Sarah is confused. Pregnancy hormones can make a young woman very unstable and sensitive.
David: Do not dare lie to me! I saw the marks on her skin with my own eyes!
Eleanor: She fell, David! She tripped over her own feet near the kitchen counter on Tuesday!
David: Fingermarks do not appear on both thighs from a simple trip on the floor!
Richard: That is enough, David. We came here to support your estate and ensure your child is raised properly.
David looked at his father, feeling a deep disappointment that cut deeper than any blade. Richard had spent forty years running a prominent legal firm in the city, controlling every family member with contracts, prenuptial agreements, and financial threats. When David married Sarah, a simple schoolteacher from a working-class neighborhood, Richard had openly disapproved of the union. He had warned David that Sarah was only after the family inheritance and the family trust fund, refusing to attend their small courthouse wedding two years prior.
Eleanor had taken that hatred even further. As Richard's second wife, she had spent years trying to secure the family real estate portfolio for her own biological son from a previous marriage. When Sarah became pregnant, Eleanor realized that David's baby would automatically become the main beneficiary of the multi-million dollar family estate upon Richard's passing. The child represented a direct threat to Eleanor's financial security, and she had decided to take matters into her own hands the moment David was called away on business trips.
David: You tried to force her out. You tried to scare her into leaving me.
Eleanor: We offered her a generous settlement package, David! A lump sum cash offer to walk away!
David: A settlement?! You offered my pregnant wife money to abandon our marriage?!
Eleanor: She doesn't fit into our world! She has no lineage, no status, and no wealth!
Sarah: I never wanted your money! I only wanted David!
Sarah walked out of the bedroom, clutching the doorframe for balance. Her eyes were red and swollen, but her posture was steady now that David stood between her and his parents. She looked directly at Eleanor, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and newfound courage as she exposed the full truth of what had happened behind closed doors over the past three weeks.
Sarah: She grabbed me by the arms and dragged me into the hallway... she tried to force me to sign papers!
David: What papers, Sarah? What did she try to make you sign?
Sarah: A voluntary surrender of custody... and a full divorce agreement drafted by your father!
