The morning sunlight poured through the large bedroom windows of the high-rise apartment, washing the white walls and hard floors in bright natural light. A framed American flag hung neatly on the far wall above the desk, completely straight and untouched. David stood near the edge of the large bed, holding his tie in one hand as he watched his wife. Sarah sat on the corner of the mattress wearing her soft blue satin robe, her posture tense and hunched over as if she were trying to make herself invisible. Her hands trembled as she pulled the fabric tightly over her lap, keeping her gaze locked firmly onto the hardwood floor.
David set his leather briefcase down on the bedside table with a soft thud and knelt right beside her. He noticed the way her shoulders twitched the moment his shadow crossed her body, a sudden reaction that felt entirely out of place for a woman who had always welcomed his touch. They had been married for two years, and Sarah was now six months pregnant with their very first child. Everything in their life was supposed to be peaceful, yet over the past month, David had noticed a quiet gray cloud hanging over her eyes whenever he returned home from his corporate business trips.
He placed a warm hand on her knee, feeling the sudden tight tension in her muscles. Slowly, with delicate fingers, David pushed back the silky edge of her robe to inspect her legs. What he saw made his breathing stop completely. Dark blue and purple bruises marked the fair skin above her knees, shaped like heavy fingers that had grabbed her with brutal force. Smaller yellowish marks rested higher up her thigh, looking like old injuries that were just starting to fade away under the skin.
David: Who did this to you, Sarah? Who hurt you like this?
Sarah: Please, David... don't ask me here. Put the robe down.
David: I am not going to ignore this. You are bleeding underneath your skin!
Sarah: Lower your voice... please. They are right outside the room.
David looked toward the bedroom door, which stood halfway open into the hallway. Standing near the wide glass window in the living room were his parents, Richard and Eleanor. His father Richard stood rigid with his arms crossed over his chest, staring out at the city skyline with a cold and indifferent expression. Beside him stood Eleanor, David's stepmother, her hands neatly folded over her designer handbag, watching the bedroom door with sharp, narrow eyes. They had moved into the guest suite three weeks ago under the excuse of helping Sarah through her difficult pregnancy while David traveled to secure a major real estate investment deal for the family business.
David gently took Sarah's shaking hands in his own, pressing his thumbs against her knuckles to calm her down. Tears began to overflow from her eyes, rolling down her pale cheeks as she choked back a quiet sob. She gripped his fingers so hard her knuckles turned white, leaning forward until her head rested against his shoulder. He could feel the rapid beat of her heart against his chest, fast like a trapped bird trying to escape a cage.
David: Look at me, Sarah. You are safe now. Tell me the truth right now.
Sarah: It happened whenever you left... every single time you drove away.
David: What did they do to you when I was gone?
Sarah: Eleanor... she grabbed me. She said I didn't belong in this family trust fund.
The words hit David like a physical blow. He stared at his wife, feeling a cold fire ignite inside his stomach. He remembered how his stepmother had insisted on coming to stay with Sarah, claiming that a young pregnant woman should never be left alone in a massive city apartment. David had trusted her, believing that Eleanor was finally making an effort to bond with the woman he loved. Instead, the moment he stepped out the door, his home had turned into a terrifying prison for his pregnant wife.
David stood up abruptly under the bright daylight flooding the bedroom. The sudden motion caused his chair to shift across the floor with a loud scraping sound. Sarah reached out to grab his sleeve, but her fingers slipped off the smooth fabric of his suit jacket. David turned toward the doorway, his eyes fixed entirely on his parents standing in the living room. The quiet, gentle husband was gone, replaced by a furious father ready to protect his growing family at any cost.
