Upstairs in the master suite, soft sunlight filtered through the sheer white curtains. Clara was sitting on the edge of the large king-sized bed, gently drying Lily's golden curly hair with a fluffy bath towel.
Lily: Clara... is the mean lady gone?
Clara: Yes, sweetie. She's gone far away and she's never coming back here again.
Lily: Did she break my birthday cake because I was bad?
Clara: Oh, sweetie, no! You were not bad at all! She was just a very mean person, but your daddy handled everything.
A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door, and Marcus stepped inside, having taken off his ruined suit jacket. He smiled warmly as he saw his daughter sitting up, clean and dry in a fresh set of pink pajamas.
Marcus: Hey, my brave little girl.
Lily: DADDY!
Lily held out her tiny arms, and Marcus rushed across the room, kneeling beside the bed and pulling her close into a gentle hug.
Marcus: How are you feeling, sweetie? Does your face still hurt?
Lily: No, Clara wiped all the pink stuff away. But my birthday cake is destroyed...
Marcus: Do you really think a little ruined cake is going to stop your birthday celebration?
Lily tilted her head, her bright blue eyes wide with curiosity as Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box.
Lily: What's that?
Marcus: Open it and see.
Lily carefully unlatched the gold clip on the box. Inside lay a delicate silver necklace with a tiny pendant shaped like a star, sparkling brightly in the sunlight.
Lily: Wow... it's so pretty!
Marcus: This belonged to your mother when she was a little girl. I was saving it for your fifth birthday, so nobody could ever take your happiness away.
Lily: Can you put it on me, Daddy?
Marcus: Of course I can, sweetheart.
Marcus carefully fastened the delicate silver chain around Lily's neck. She held the tiny star pendant in her small palm, a genuine, joyful smile finally returning to her face.
Clara: Mr. Marcus, the head chef just called up from the kitchen. He said he has a fresh chocolate ice cream cake ready in the freezer if you two want to restart the party.
Marcus: Chocolate ice cream cake? What do you think, birthday girl?
Lily: YES! I want chocolate cake with Daddy and Clara!
Marcus laughed, a sound filled with deep, overwhelming relief as he picked Lily up and spun her around in his arms.
Marcus: Then chocolate cake it is! Let me go change my shirt and we will have the best birthday party this house has ever seen.
