The Shadows On The Balcony

Her Stepmother Pushed Her Off The Balcony Until Her Husband Called Police

Arthur: "Are you bleeding? Chloe, talk to me! Did you hit your head on the columns?"

Chloe: "No... no, you caught me, Arthur... but my arm hurts so bad..."

Arthur: "Hold on tight to me. Don't look up, just breathe."

Arthur cradled Chloe close against his black suit jacket, his bald head gleaming under the bright chandelier lights as his chest heaved with heavy breaths. Up on the second-story balcony, Victoria clutched her burgundy gown, leaning over the white railing with a pale, horrified face.

Victoria: "Arthur! Arthur, my son, thank God you caught her! She slipped! She tried to jump!"

Chloe: "She's lying! Arthur, she pushed me! She tried to kill me!"

Arthur: "Shut up, Mom! Just shut your mouth!"

Victoria: "Arthur! How dare you speak to your mother like that?! She was hysterical! I tried to grab her silk pajama shirt to save her, but she fell!"

Arthur: "I saw you, Mom! I looked up through the glass doors right as I ran in! I saw your hands on her shoulders!"

Victoria gasped, taking a step backward against the pristine white wall beneath the framed American flag. Her hands trembled as she pressed them against her burgundy dress.

Victoria: "You are mistaken! You were running, you couldn't have seen clearly!"

Arthur: "I know what my own eyes saw! You pushed my wife off a twenty-foot balcony!"

Chloe: "She wanted the files, Arthur... she searched our master suite while you were at the office..."

Arthur: "What files, Chloe? What was she looking for?"

Chloe: "The estate trust fund documents... the ones your late father left in the safety deposit box..."

Arthur's eyes narrowed into a glare of absolute fury. He gently shifted Chloe so she was resting comfortably against the base of a white column, then stood up on the polished dark marble floor. His black suit was wrinkled, but his posture was rigid with anger.

Arthur: "You did all this for father's inheritance, didn't you?"

Victoria: "That trust fund belongs to me! I was his wife for thirty years!"

Arthur: "You were divorced five years before he died! You have no legal claim to this mansion or his estate!"

Victoria: "I raised you in this house! I deserve half of everything!"

Arthur: "You deserve to sit in a state prison for attempted murder!"

The sound of heavy tires crunching over the gravel outside signaled the arrival of local authorities. Red and blue lights flashed brightly through the tall foyer windows, painting the white walls in sharp, dramatic colors. Arthur turned his phone over in his hand, holding the open call line up toward the balcony.

Arthur: "The Dallas Police Department dispatcher heard every single word you just shouted, Mom."

Victoria: "You... you recorded me?!"

Arthur: "I didn't need to record you. You confessed over the emergency line!"

Victoria's face turned completely white. She backed away toward the upper hallway, but the heavy front doors burst open once more. Three uniformed local police officers rushed into the grand white marble foyer, their boots clicking loudly as they took in the dramatic scene.

Officer Ramirez: "Police! Nobody move! Where is the caller?"

Arthur: "I called, Officer! My mother just shoved my wife off that second-story balcony! She is upstairs right now!"

Officer Ramirez: "Officers, move upstairs and detain the suspect in the burgundy gown immediately!"

The two junior officers drew their gear and charged up the grand curved staircase, their heavy footsteps echoing through the luxury estate. Up on the second-story balcony, in front of the American flag, the officers surrounded Victoria, grabbing her arms firmly.

Victoria: "Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?! I am Victoria Vance!"

Officer Miller: "Ma'am, stay still! You are being detained for felony aggravated assault and attempted murder!"

Victoria: "Arthur! Tell them to stop! You can't let them do this to your mother!"

Arthur: "I'm not stopping anything, Mom. You brought this on yourself."

The officers clicked the heavy steel handcuffs around Victoria's wrists right there on the balcony, concluding the dramatic sequence while Arthur dropped back down to comfort his sobbing wife.
