Marcus: Officer, before you take her away, I need you to listen to this recording on my phone.
Marcus pulled his smartphone out from his suit jacket, pressing play on a voice memo recording that had been running continuously since he entered the house.
Smartphone (Elena's Voice):"It was thirty million dollars! If you signed those updated legal papers with your family attorney today, my entire inheritance was going to be wiped out! I left a bottle of fruit punch on the table for her!"
Police Officer 1: Is that your voice on this recording, ma'am?
Elena: That recording was taken without my consent! It's inadmissible in court!
Police Officer 1: In a child endangerment case involving a minor, audio evidence taken on private property by the legal guardian is fully admissible, ma'am.
Marcus: My sister Sarah is sitting in my car outside with my daughter Clara. The child was locked in that windowless basement for over forty-eight hours without proper care.
Police Officer 1: Dispatch, send an ambulance unit to the Sterling estate immediately for a pediatric evaluation.
Elena: Marcus, please! Don't let them take me to jail in front of the neighbors! Think about the family reputation!
Marcus: You destroyed this family's reputation the day you tried to steal my father's legacy, Elena. The neighbors are going to see exactly who you are.
The officers escorted Elena out through the grand double doors into the bright sunlight[cite: 1]. Neighbors stood at the edge of their manicured lawns, holding up their phones to film the greedy stepmother being loaded into the back of a black police cruiser.
Elena: Get those cameras out of my face! I am Elena Sterling! I own this entire neighborhood!
Neighbor 1: Look at her trench coat covered in red juice! She actually locked that little girl downstairs!
Neighbor 2: Monster! You belong in a cell!
Marcus walked out onto the marble porch, watching as the police car drove down the long driveway with its blue lights flashing. He took a deep breath of the crisp, clean air, feeling the heavy weight lifting off his shoulders at last.
Sarah stepped out of the SUV, holding little Clara by her hand. The little girl ran across the stone driveway and wrapped her arms around Marcus's leg.
Clara: Is the mean lady gone, Daddy?
Marcus: She's gone forever, baby. She is never coming back to this house again.
Sarah: What about the estate trust fund, Marcus? What happens to the mansion now?
Marcus: The police chief said the probate court will freeze all accounts until the criminal trial is over. Once Elena is convicted of forgery and child endangerment, her marriage contract with Dad will be legally annulled.
Sarah: So Clara gets her full inheritance back?
Marcus: Every single penny. But more importantly, Clara gets her home back.
