Marcus: Argh! Come on... snap!
Sarah: Pull harder, Marcus! Use the leverage against the door handle!
Elena: Marcus, wait! If you break that custom lock, the security alarm system will alert the police central office automatically!
Marcus: Good! I want the police here! I want them to drag you out of this house in handcuffs!
With a sharp, deafening metallic crack, the padlocked chain snapped in two[cite: 1]. The heavy iron links hit the marble floor with a loud clang, bouncing into the sticky red pool[cite: 1]. Marcus threw the fire poker aside and kicked the heavy wooden double doors wide open[cite: 1].
Marcus: Clara!
Bright natural daylight flooded down the steep concrete staircase leading into the dark basement[cite: 1]. At the bottom of the steps, a tiny girl in a ruined yellow dress sat shivering against a stack of cardboard storage boxes, her face covered in dust and dried tears.
Clara: Daddy!
Marcus took three steps at a time, charging down the staircase and scooping his daughter into his arms[cite: 1]. He pulled her small body tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair as he sobbed aloud.
Marcus: I've got you, baby... I've got you. You're safe now. Daddy has got you.
Clara: She locked me in the room, Daddy... She told me if I made any noise, you wouldn't love me anymore...
Marcus: She lied to you, Clara. She is a terrible, wicked liar. I love you more than life itself.
Sarah rushed down the steps right behind him, wrapping a warm woolen cardigan around Clara's shivering shoulders.
Sarah: Let's get her upstairs into the sunlight, Marcus. She needs fresh air and water right away.
Marcus: Take her to my car, Sarah. Lock the doors and keep her safe while I deal with Elena.
Sarah: Don't do anything foolish, Marcus. The police are already on their way.
Marcus: Just take my daughter outside.
Sarah carried little Clara up the concrete stairs, stepping past the broken chain and out into the bright foyer[cite: 1]. Marcus slowly walked up the steps behind them, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his neck stood out[cite: 1]. Upstairs, Elena was on her feet, crawling toward her designer handbag near the front entrance doors.
Marcus: Don't you dare touch that bag, Elena.
Elena: Marcus, please... let me leave! I'll give up all rights to the estate! I'll sign over the mansion, the trust fund, everything!
Marcus: You don't have anything to give up, Elena. This house belonged to my late wife, and every single dime in that trust belongs to Clara.
Elena: You don't understand what my life was like before I met you! I can't go back to being poor! I can't go to prison!
Marcus: You should have thought about that before you locked a motherless six-year-old child in an underground dungeon!
Elena scrambled to her feet, her trench coat stained red, her hair messy and wild as she grabbed a heavy brass statue from the foyer sideboard[cite: 1].
Elena: Stay away from me! I swear I'll hit you if you come any closer!
Marcus: Put the statue down, Elena. You're only making your sentence longer.
Elena: I am not going to rot in a cell while you and your daughter spend thirty million dollars of my husband's estate!
Marcus: Your husband? My father died three months ago, Elena! You married an eighty-year-old sick man on his deathbed just to steal his life's work!
Elena: He loved me! He wanted me to have his money!
Marcus: He had dementia, and you forged his signature on the updated will! Clara overheard you admitting it to your lawyer on the phone, didn't she?! That's why you locked her away!
