A Safe Future For Leo

Her Stepmother Hurt The Baby While Her Husband Was Away

The mansion hallway fell completely quiet, saved for the soft ambient echo of the house. Sunlight streamed through the high windows, illuminating the American flag and the polished marble floor.

Deputy Miller: An ambulance unit is on its way, Mr. Vance. They need to examine the child's bruises and document everything for the medical report.

Marcus: Thank you, Deputy. I appreciate your quick response.

Deputy Miller: We take child endangerment very seriously, sir. A detective will be in touch tomorrow to take your official deposition.

Marcus: I will be ready. Thank you.

Deputy Miller tipped his hat to Sarah, then walked out through the front doors, closing them softly behind him.

Marcus walked over to Sarah, who was still sitting on the marble floor holding little Leo close against her shoulder. The baby had stopped crying, his small thumb tucked into his mouth as he looked up at his father with big, dark eyes.

Marcus: Sarah... I don't even know how to begin thanking you. You put yourself in danger to protect my son.

Sarah: You don't need to thank me, Mr. Marcus. I loved your late wife, and I swore to her before she passed that I would always watch over Leo.

Marcus: Look at your face... she hurt you badly.

Sarah: Cuts and bruises heal, sir. But if you hadn't come back early today... I don't know what she would have done to him next.

Marcus dropped to his knees beside her, gently taking Leo into his arms. He kissed his son's forehead, holding him tight against his chest as tears filled his own eyes.

Marcus: Nobody is ever going to hurt you again, Leo. Daddy promises you.

Sarah: What will happen to the mansion now, Mr. Marcus?

Marcus: I'm putting this house on the market tomorrow morning. We're moving to our beach house in California, far away from Victoria and her family.

Sarah: That sounds wonderful, sir. Leo will love the ocean air.

Marcus: And I want you to come with us, Sarah. As Leo's permanent, full-time guardian and head of our household.

Sarah: Mr. Marcus... are you serious?

Marcus: You are the only person in this world who protected my child when I wasn't here. I'm quadrupling your salary, and you'll have your own private suite in the new house.

Sarah: Thank you, Mr. Marcus... thank you so much! I will take care of him with my whole life.

Marcus: I know you will, Sarah. I know you will.

Little Leo reached his tiny hand out, grabbing Sarah's finger with a small, sweet giggle. The dark shadows that had hung over the Vance mansion were finally gone, replaced by the warm morning sun and the promise of a safe, happy new beginning.
