A Real Family

Four months later, the bright summer sun illuminated the private rooftop garden of the Sterling penthouse. The city skyline stretched out in all directions, but inside the glass terrace, the atmosphere was warm, peaceful, and filled with light.

Chloe stood near the cradle holding a small newborn baby wrapped in a soft white wool blanket. Her knee was completely healed, leaving only a faint silver line that was barely noticeable beneath her summer dress.

Mark: Look at those tiny blue eyes, Chloe. She looks just like you when you were sleeping this morning.

Chloe: She has your dark hair, Mark. And she certainly has your stubbornness when it comes to feeding time.

Mark laughed softly, stepping up behind Chloe and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling both her and little Sophia close against his chest.

Mark: How are you feeling today, mom?

Chloe: I feel completely at peace, Mark. For the first time since we got married, I feel like this house is truly ours.

Mark: It has always been yours, Chloe. From the moment you walked into my life, you were the only thing that mattered to me.

Chloe: I was so scared that day... when your mother was standing over me. I thought she was going to destroy everything we built.

Mark: Nobody could ever destroy us, sweetheart. Not my family, not their money, and not their pride.

The soft chime of a cell phone sounded from the nearby garden table. Mark reached over, picking up his phone to look at the screen. A digital notification from his legal team appeared on the display.

Chloe: Is that news from the court?

Mark: The final sentencing was handed down twenty minutes ago. Eleanor received six years in state prison, with no option for early parole for the first four years.

Chloe: Six years... That's a long time for someone who never spent a night away from five-star hotels.

Mark: It's the consequence of her own actions. She chose cruelty, and now she has to live with it.

Mark slid the phone back into his pocket, turning his complete attention back to his wife and newborn child. Little Sophia let out a soft yawn, her tiny fingers curling around Mark's pinky finger as he gently stroked her cheek.

Chloe: What are we going to tell her when she grows up, Mark? About her grandmother?

Mark: We'll tell her the truth. We'll tell her that her mother was brave, that her father loved her more than life itself, and that real family isn't about status or money—it's about protecting the people you love.

Chloe: I like the sound of that story.

Mark: It's our story, Chloe. And it's only just beginning.

The warm summer afternoon breeze blew softly through the open glass doors, carrying the sweet scent of fresh flowers across the terrace as the young family held each other tight in the quiet sunlight.
