The Scars She Tried To Hide

Mark: Did you push my pregnant wife onto a glass table, Mother?

Eleanor: Don't speak to me in that tone, Mark. I am your mother.

Mark: Answer my question! Did you put your hands on Chloe?!

Eleanor: She was being insolent. I brought her a legal document regarding your prenuptial agreement, and she refused to look at it.

Mark: A prenuptial agreement? We have been married for two years!

Eleanor: A marriage that I never approved of! She is a small-town schoolteacher with no family backing or trust fund. She does not belong in the Sterling family lineage.

Chloe: I tried to tell her that we already settled everything before our wedding, Mark... but she wouldn't listen to me...

Eleanor: Keep quiet! You don't speak while the adults are talking!

Mark: Do not shout at my wife in my own house!

Richard: Son, control your temper. Your mother was only looking out for the family estate. You brought a woman into this family who has no understanding of high society or our corporate responsibilities.

Mark: You stood there and let her push a pregnant woman, Father? You sat back and watched her hurt Chloe?

Richard: She didn't mean to cut her knee. The girl lost her footing because she was emotional. A minor scratch is hardly a tragedy.

Chloe: A minor scratch?! The doctor had to come to the apartment to give me six stitches on my leg, Richard!

Eleanor: Oh, stop crying for attention, Chloe. You've been putting on a performance ever since Mark walked through the door.

Mark took three long strides across the hardwood floor until he was standing inches away from Eleanor. His hands were clenched into tight fists at his sides, his chest heaving as he stared down at his mother.

Mark: You forced a doctor to come here quietly so I wouldn't find out, didn't you?

Eleanor: I hired a private physician so we wouldn't have hospital reports leaking to the press! Do you have any idea what a scandal like this would do to our company stock before the quarterly board meeting?

Mark: You care more about our company stock than the health of your grandchild?!

Eleanor: That baby isn't even born yet! And frankly, given her background, I'm not even convinced it's a true Sterling heir!

A loud, sharp slap echoed through the bedroom. Chloe gasped, pulling her white silk robe tighter around her shoulders as Eleanor stumbled back against the doorframe, her hand pressed against her burning cheek.

Eleanor: You... you hit your own mother?!

Mark: That was for my wife. And if you ever speak about my unborn child like that again, you will leave this building in a stretcher.

Richard: Mark! That is enough! You have completely lost your mind over this girl!

Mark: Get out of my apartment, Father. Both of you. Get out right now before I call security to drag you down to the lobby.

Eleanor: This is my son's penthouse! I paid for the interior designer who built these walls!

Mark: The deed is in my name, Mother. And as of right now, you are officially trespassing on my property.
