Six months later, the sun shone brightly through the high glass windows of the Dallas County Courthouse. Inside the courtroom, Evelyn sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, her hands handcuffed to a waist chain.
Her expensive green silk dresses were gone, replaced by the harsh reality of state custody. Her high-priced defense attorneys sat beside her, looking through stacks of undeniable evidence.
Across the aisle, Julian sat in a crisp navy suit, holding seven-year-old Leo on his lap. Sitting next to them was Maya, wearing a tailored cream dress, her hair styled neatly, looking radiant and confident.
Judge Ellison: "Court is now in session. Case number 26-CR-9041, State of Texas versus Evelyn Sterling."
Prosecutor: "Your Honor, the state presents a complete plea agreement signed by the defendant."
Judge Ellison: "Mrs. Sterling, do you understand that by pleading guilty to first-degree arson, attempted murder, child endangerment, and illegal adoption trafficking, you waive your right to a trial by jury?"[cite: 1]

Julian stood up, looking at her with cold, unyielding eyes.
Julian: "You didn't do it for me or my father, Evelyn. You did it out of greed. You stole an infant from a mother, you used a child as a bargaining chip, and then you tried to burn him alive."[cite: 1]
Judge Ellison: "Evelyn Sterling, for your monstrous actions, I sentence you to twenty-five years at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice without the possibility of parole for fifteen years."
Evelyn: "Twenty-five years?! No! Your Honor, please! Julian, help me!"
The bailiffs grabbed Evelyn by her arms, dragging her through the side door as she screamed and wept, her voice fading down the cold concrete hallway.
Judge Montgomery then turned her attention to the custody documents resting on her desk.
Judge Ellison: "Now, regarding the civil matter of custody for the minor child, Leo Lin Sterling."
Maya and Julian stepped up to the podium together, holding hands as Leo stood between them.
Judge Ellison: "I have reviewed the joint custody agreement submitted by Miss Maya Lin and Mr. Julian Sterling. Miss Lin, as the legal biological mother, you are granting co-parenting rights and joint guardianship to Mr. Sterling?"
Maya: "Yes, Your Honor. Mr. Sterling has been a loving father to Leo his entire life. My son deserves both of us."
Judge Ellison: "And Mr. Sterling, you agree to establish a full trust fund for Leo, as well as providing full financial support for Miss Lin's nursing education?"
Julian: "Yes, Your Honor. Maya saved my son's life, and she restored my family. I am honored to share his upbringing with her."
Judge Ellison: "Agreement approved and finalized. Court is adjourned."
The judge struck her gavel down sharply, sealing the legal beginning of a new chapter for their lives.
