Julian: "What... what did you just say, Maya?!"
Maya: "Leo is my biological son, Mr. Sterling."
Julian: "Your son?! How is that possible?!"
Maya: "Eight years ago, I was nineteen, poor, and completely alone in Houston. I was admitted to St. Jude's Hospital to give birth."
Leo: "Maya... you're my real mommy?"
Maya dropped to her knees beside the gurney, wrapping her arms around the little boy and pressing her soot-covered cheek against his forehead.
Maya: "Yes, sweetie. I am your real mommy."
Julian: "I don't understand... if Evelyn stole your baby, how did you end up working as a maid in my house?!"[cite: 1]
Maya: "When I woke up at the clinic, the doctor told me my baby had died during delivery. I believed them for six years."
Julian: "My God..."
Maya: "Then last year, a nurse who was working at St. Jude's fell terminally ill. She sent me a letter confessing that she helped Evelyn forge adoption papers in exchange for fifty thousand dollars."
Julian: "So you tracked her down to my estate..."[cite: 1]
Maya: "I applied for the maid position six months ago just to be close to him. I needed to be certain before I did anything. I needed to see if he was loved."[cite: 1]
Julian: "And what did you find?"
Maya: "I found that you loved him with all your heart, Mr. Sterling. But Evelyn treated him like a piece of property."
Julian: "I had no idea... I swear to you, Maya, on my life, I had no idea she stole him from you!"
Maya: "I know you didn't, sir. You were a good father to him while you were home. That's why I didn't take him and run away months ago."
Detective Vance walked back over, holding a clipboard with legal documentation attached.
Detective Vance: "Miss Lin, we have the clinic's records seized from Evelyn's private safe in her downtown office. DNA confirmation was completed three days ago by the state lab."
Julian: "You already knew about this, Detective?"
Detective Vance: "Miss Lin filed a formal complaint with the state police three weeks ago, Mr. Sterling. We were preparing to execute an arrest warrant tomorrow morning, but Mrs. Sterling accelerated her plans with this fire."[cite: 1]
Julian: "So the fire... she set it because she knew the police were closing in on her!"[cite: 1]
Detective Vance: "Exactly. She wanted to destroy the evidence, collect the insurance payout, and flee the country."
Leo reached out his small hand, wiping a tear from Maya's soot-stained face.
Leo: "Maya... does this mean I have to leave Daddy?"
Julian felt a sharp pain in his chest, looking down at the boy he had raised, loved, and held for seven years.
Julian: "Maya... please... I know I'm not his birth father, but he's my whole world. Please don't take him away from me completely."
Maya looked from the frightened boy to the heartbroken man kneeling in the wet grass. She took a deep, steadying breath and smiled softly through her tears.
Maya: "He doesn't have to lose his father, Mr. Sterling. You gave him a home and a heart. We can figure this out together."
