Three days later, the morning sun lit up a private room at the military hospital.
Claire sat up in bed, color returning to her cheeks as she held a warm cup of herbal tea.
Her father sat in an armchair beside her, dressed in a comfortable civilian sweater, reading through legal files.
Claire: "How are the court proceedings going, Papa?"
Marcus: "The grand jury indicted Grant and his father yesterday afternoon on twenty-four counts."
Claire: "Twenty-four counts?"
Marcus: "Wire fraud, bank fraud, aggravated assault, conspiracy, and extortion."
Claire: "What about Evelyn?"
Marcus: "She's being charged as an accessory after the fact. Her bail was denied because she's considered a flight risk."
Claire looked down at her pregnant belly, feeling a soft kick against her palm.
Claire: "He kicked again, Papa. Feel it."
Marcus put his file down, standing up and placing his large hand gently over Claire's belly.
He felt a firm, healthy kick from inside, and a bright smile broke across his rugged face.
Marcus: "He's strong. Just like his mother."
Claire: "The doctor said the ultrasound showed no permanent damage from the fall. He's completely healthy."
Marcus: "That's the best news I've heard in my entire life."
A knock sounded at the hospital door, and a young military lawyer in a sharp dark suit walked in carrying a leather briefcase.
Attorney Ross: "General Vance. Mrs. Sterling. Good morning."
Claire: "Please, Captain Ross... call me Claire. I'm filing the paperwork to drop the Sterling name today."
Attorney Ross: "Understood, Claire. I have the divorce decree draft right here, along with the petition to restore your maiden name."
Marcus: "What about her trust fund assets?"
Attorney Ross: "The federal court froze all accounts on Monday. We successfully transferred thirty-two million dollars back into Claire's private estate trust."
Claire's eyes widened in amazement.
Claire: "Thirty-two million? I thought Grant spent half of it!"
Attorney Ross: "He tried to transfer twelve million to a Swiss account, but the FBI intercepted the transaction before it cleared."
Marcus: "So her inheritance is fully intact?"
Attorney Ross: "Every single cent, General. Plus, we are filing a civil lawsuit for punitive damages against the Sterling family estate."
Claire: "I don't want their money, Captain. I just want my freedom."
Attorney Ross: "You have your freedom, Claire. Grant signed the full surrender of parental rights this morning in exchange for avoiding a life sentence without parole."
Claire closed her eyes, taking a deep, clean breath for the first time in months.
Claire: "He surrendered his rights?"
Attorney Ross: "Permanently. He will never have legal access to your child, nor will he ever be allowed within five hundred yards of you."
Marcus: "Thank you, Ross. Exceptional work."
Attorney Ross: "Just doing my duty, General. Take care, Claire."
The lawyer bowed his head respectfully and exited the room, leaving father and daughter alone once again.
