Justice Served

Six weeks later, the Dallas County Courthouse was surrounded by reporters and camera crews. The story of the broken high-society engagement and the assault arrest had leaked to the press, sparking massive public interest across Texas.

Inside the courtroom, Vanessa sat at the defense table in a plain black suit, her hands clasped tightly together. Her former arrogance was completely gone, replaced by a nervous, pale look as Judge Katherine Miller took the bench.

Gabriel sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Ellen, who was dressed in a neat floral dress, her arm completely healed with only a faint mark remaining.

Judge Miller: We are here for the final disposition in the state of Texas versus Vanessa Sterling, charged with felony assault causing bodily injury.

Prosecutor: Your Honor, the state presents the original 4K security footage from the scene, showing a clear, intentional act of violence against an employee, as well as medical documentation confirming second-degree burns.

Defense Lawyer: Your Honor, my client has reached a full civil settlement with the victim and has agreed to complete anger management courses. We ask for probation and deferred adjudication.

Judge Miller looked over her glasses at Vanessa, her tone strict and uncompromising.

Judge Miller: Miss Sterling, wealth and social status do not give anyone the right to treat another human being with cruelty. Your actions were abusive, arrogant, and dangerous.

Vanessa: I am deeply sorry, Your Honor... I've learned my lesson...

Judge Miller: I hope you have. I am sentencing you to two hundred hours of mandatory community service, two years of felony probation, and a mandatory five-thousand-dollar fine. Furthermore, a permanent protective order is issued regarding Miss Ellen Davis.

Judge Miller brought the gavel down with a sharp crack.

Judge Miller: Court is adjourned.

Vanessa lowered her head, tears of humiliation slipping down her cheeks as reporters wrote furiously on their notebooks. She looked over at Gabriel, hoping for a sliver of sympathy, but Gabriel didn't even look back at her.

Outside on the courthouse steps, Gabriel stood beside Ellen as reporters rushed forward with microphones.

Reporter 1: Mr. Vance! How does it feel to walk away from a million-dollar wedding and a major business partnership over this?

Gabriel: Principles are worth more than money. Standing up for what is right will always be more important than protecting a title or a reputation.

Reporter 2: Ellen, do you feel justice was served today?

Maid: Yes. Mr. Gabriel protected me when nobody else would, and I am grateful for his courage.

They walked down the granite steps together, leaving the media frenzy behind them.

Back at the Dallas estate, the warm Texas sun shone brightly through the tall arched windows, casting clear daylight across the crisp white walls and sparkling chandelier. The dining room was quiet, peaceful, and clean.

Gabriel stood by the window, looking out over the manicured grounds. He knew the path ahead meant rebuilding parts of his business, but his heart was lighter than it had been in years.

He had lost a fiancée, but he had kept his integrity, his honor, and his self-respect—and that was a trade he would make every single time.
