Six months later, the Dallas County Criminal Courts Building was packed with reporters, news crews, and public onlookers. The trial of the prominent Dallas socialite who kept her stepdaughter locked under the stairs had gripped the entire nation.
Victoria sat at the defense table wearing an orange county jail jumpsuit. Her once-styled hair was dry and messy, pulled back into a simple plastic band, and her face was thin and hollow.
On the other side of the courtroom sat Daniel in a tailored suit, flanked by his legal team. Sitting behind him in the gallery was his sister, holding little Emily's hand.
Judge Miller: "This court is now in session for final sentencing in the case of the State of Texas versus Victoria Vance."
Prosecutor: "Your Honor, the defendant committed an act of unspeakable cruelty against an innocent eight-year-old child for pure financial greed. She stole four years of this young girl's life, keeping her in a dark, cold closet while spending her inheritance. The state requests the maximum penalty allowed under Texas law."
Defense Attorney: "Your Honor, my client expresses deep remorse and asks the court to consider her clean prior record..."
Judge Miller: "Counsel, spare this courtroom your pleas for leniency. I have reviewed the 4K security footage. The image of a three-year-old child sliding crusts of bread under a locked door because her stepmother refused to feed her prisoner is something this court will never forget."
Judge Miller turned her stern gaze toward Victoria, who sat trembling at the table.
Judge Miller: "Victoria Vance, you are a predator who used a child as a financial hostage. On the charges of aggravated kidnapping, injury to a child, and grand fraud, I sentence you to life imprisonment at the Mountain View Unit in Gatesville, Texas, without the possibility of parole."
The heavy wooden gavel slammed down onto the block with a loud, echoey crash.
Victoria burst into hysterical screams as two female bailiffs grabbed her shoulders, forcing her arms behind her back to lead her out through the side holding door.
Victoria: "Daniel! Please! Tell them to stop! I loved you!"
Daniel stood up calmly, watching her get dragged away without showing a single trace of emotion.
Daniel: "You only loved yourself, Victoria."
