The small click echoed through the quiet hallway like a tiny bell ringing in the dark.
David pulled back the wooden molding to reveal a small hidden hatch hidden in the floor structure.
The wooden door was roughly two feet wide and blended perfectly with the floor pattern.
David hesitated for a second as he felt a cold breeze draft out from the narrow opening.
He reached down and lifted the small wooden door slowly on its old metal hinges.
A sudden gasp escaped his throat as he looked down into the hidden crawlspace underneath the floor.
The space below was narrow, dark, and filled with old dusty blankets and a small cushion.
Sitting in the middle of the crawlspace was a dirty, trembling child holding her knees tight.
David pulled out his phone and turned on the bright flashlight beam to see better.
The light illuminated a young girl with tangled brown hair and dusty, wrinkled clothes.
She cowered back against the rough wooden beams, shielding her eyes from the bright light.
David: Oh my God... what is this?
Lily: See, Daddy? I told you she was real.
David could not process what his eyes were seeing inside his own home.
He heard quick footsteps hurrying down the carpeted stairs behind him in the hallway.
His wife Helen stopped dead in her tracks at the end of the staircase.
Her face went pale white as she saw David kneeling over the open floor hatch.
Helen: David! What on earth are you doing on the floor?
David: Helen, look down here right now!
Helen: Put that wood back, David, you are scaring Lily!
David: Who is this child inside our floor crawlspace, Helen?
Helen took a sharp step back, her hands shaking as she pulled her robe tight.
Helen: I... I don't know what you are talking about, David.
David: Do not lie to me right now!
Helen: It must be a stray girl who snuck in through the basement window!
David: A child does not build a carpeted crawlspace with a latch on her own!
David turned his focus back down toward the terrified child sitting in the small compartment.
His heart ached as he saw how frightened and hungry the little girl looked in the beam.
He lowered his voice, making sure to speak in the softest tone he could manage.
David: Don't be afraid, little one. I won't hurt you.
The young girl slowly lowered her dusty arms away from her tired, tear-stained face.
She looked up directly at David, her large brown eyes shining under the bright flashlight.
David froze completely as he looked closely at her facial features and delicate jawline.
Tears began to pool in David's eyes as a deep memory stirred inside his mind.
David: Who are you, little girl?
The small girl slowly reached out her dirty, trembling hand toward David's face.
Her fingers gently touched his cheek as tears streamed down her dusty skin.
Unknown Girl: Daddy... you came back.
