The polished white marble stairs of the Sterling estate gleamed under the bright morning sun. Samuel Vance adjusted his silk tie as he walked down the grand steps, his leather shoes clicking against the stone. An enormous American flag hung quietly between the towering pillars, catching the gentle breeze. He had a board meeting in less than an hour to discuss the future of his family business, but his mind was far away, weighed down by memories he had tried for three years to bury.
Samuel: Make sure the driver has the car ready at the front gate, Thomas.
Thomas: Yes, Mr. Vance. Everything is prepared for your departure.
Samuel: Good. It’s going to be a long day with the lawyers and the estate trustees.
He took another step down toward the driveway, stopping abruptly as a shadow crossed the marble floor. A woman had shuffled past the security gates, stumbling toward the bottom of the grand staircase. Her clothes were dirty and torn, her bare feet bruised and cut from walking on rough gravel. Clutched tightly against her chest was a small bundle wrapped in a frayed, faded blanket.
Woman: Sir... please... are you looking for someone to work?
Samuel: Miss, this is private property. You can't be here.
Woman: I'll do anything. I can clean, I can scrub floors, anything at all. My daughter hasn't eaten since yesterday.
Samuel stopped dead in his tracks. The woman looked up, her face covered in dirt, cuts, and faint bruises. Her eyes were rimmed with red, full of tears that spilled down her cheeks. Yet beneath the grime and injuries, the structure of her face was painfully familiar. His heart gave a violent shudder inside his chest.
Woman: Please, sir... just a few dollars for milk...
Samuel: Catherine?
Catherine: Samuel... Oh God, Samuel... Your mother took me.
Samuel: Catherine! Oh God, Catherine!
Samuel rushed down the remaining steps, dropping his leather briefcase onto the marble. He reached out with trembling hands, placing them gently on her shivering shoulders before pulling her and the small bundle into a desperate, protective embrace. He cradled her head against his suit jacket, feeling her violent sobs as three years of dark lies began to unravel right in front of his home.
