Clara: "Custody papers? But I don't have money for a custody battle, Mr. Sterling."
Richard: "There won't be a battle. I'm going to pay for the top family lawyers in the state. We will share full joint custody."
Clara: "You... you want me to be a part of his life?"
Richard: "Part of his life? Clara, you saved his life today. You are his mother. I want you to raise him here, with me, in this house."
Clara: "As the maid?"
Richard: "No. You are done cleaning this house. Tomorrow, we move your things into the master guest suite."
Clara: "I can't accept that. I came here to work."
Richard: "And you ended up saving my family. You deserve a proper life here. My father's trust fund will provide full financial support for you and our son."
Clara looked down at the newborn, tears of relief falling onto her blue uniform.
Clara: "I spent nine months cleaning the nursery, wondering who would sleep in that crib. I never imagined he was mine the whole time."
Richard: "He was meant to be with you. What do you want to name him?"
Clara: "I've always loved the name Ethan."
Richard: "Ethan Sterling. It fits him perfectly."
Three months passed quickly. The grand mansion was no longer a cold, quiet place. Soft baby toys sat near the fireplace, and the sound of laughter echoed through the foyer where chaos had once taken place.
Clara stood near the large window in the living hall, wearing a simple beige dress instead of her old blue uniform. Richard walked up behind her, holding two cups of warm tea.
Richard: "The lawyer called ten minutes ago. The judge signed the final custody order. You are officially recognized as Ethan's legal biological mother."
Clara: "And Victoria?"
Richard: "Her trial is set for next month. The prosecutor said she's facing up to twenty years in prison without parole."
Clara: "I still have nightmares about that morning, Richard. What if I was five seconds slower?"
Richard: "You weren't slower. You were there when he needed you most. That's what a real mother does."
Richard handed her the tea cup and reached down to take Ethan from his wooden bassinet nearby.
Richard: "We built a home here, Clara. A real home."
Clara: "Thank you for trusting me, Richard. For giving us a chance."
Richard: "You gave me a son. I'm the one who should be thanking you."
