Just then, a middle-aged man holding two large plastic cups of ice lemonade came running around the street corner. His face was completely pale with panic as he saw a large crowd of leather-clad men standing around his young daughter on the sidewalk. He nearly stumbled over his own feet when he spotted the heavy motorcycles parked along the curb.
Tom: Lily! Lily, are you okay?! What happened?!
Tom dropped the cups of cold lemonade directly onto the grass and rushed forward, pushing his way through the small space between the parked motorcycles.
Jax: Hold on there, sir. Take a breath. She's completely safe.
Tom: What's going on here? Who are you people, and why are you around my daughter?
Lily: Dad! Look at my cast! Jax and his awesome friends signed it for me!
Tom stopped dead in his tracks, looking from his glowing, smiling daughter down to the bold black signatures written across her leg cast. He looked up at Jax, who stood up to his full height and held out a large, friendly hand toward the worried father.
Jax: I'm Jax. Three teenage punks were crowding her, trying to scare her while you were away. We just stepped in to make sure she was taken care of properly.
Tom: Oh... oh, wow. I was only gone for three minutes. I couldn't get through the lemonade line fast enough.
Jax: You don't have to explain anything to us, brother. Texas streets belong to good people, not bullies.
Big Mike: Those kids ran off real quick once they saw us pull up. They won't be coming back anywhere near here.
Tom stared at the large, muscular man before him, the extreme tension in his shoulders dropping instantly as he finally realized what had transpired. He reached out and shook Jax's hand with a firm, deep grip, his eyes showing profound relief and gratitude.
Tom: I don't even know what to say to you all. I was terrified when I saw all these bikes from across the street.
Lily: Dad, they protected me from those mean boys! They said we're family now!
Tom looked down at his daughter, noticing for the very first time that her tears were completely gone, replaced by a radiant glow of pure pride. He wiped a tired hand across his own eyes, clearing away a sudden wave of deep emotional relief that swept over him.
Tom: You men are true guardians. I can't tell you what this means to a father who was terrified for his child.
