The blue-uniformed police officer stepped close and grabbed Evelyn's thin wrist firmly. The metal handcuffs clicked loudly into place around her wrists under the bright daylight.
Officer Davis: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Evelyn: Let go of me! Marcus, tell them to stop! I will give you the house! I will give you everything!
Marcus: Keep your dirty money, Evelyn. You're going to spend the rest of your life behind cold steel bars.
Evelyn: Chloe, please! I was your mother figure for five years! Tell them it was a misunderstanding!
Chloe looked up from her hospital bed, her calm freckled face showing no anger, only complete peace.
Chloe: You were never my mother, Evelyn. You were just a thief who got caught.
Officer Davis: Watch your head, ma'am. You are under arrest for first-degree murder and attempted murder.
The two police officers escorted the screaming, weeping elderly woman out into the long corridor. Her loud cries faded slowly as she was led down the hallway toward the waiting police car outside.
The hospital room became quiet once again. The bright sun continued to shine through the window, illuminating the hardwood floor where the signed paper forms were left behind.
Marcus walked over to the bed and sat down gently on the edge of the mattress. He reached out and took his little sister's hand, squeezing it tightly.
Marcus: It's finally done, Chloe. Dad can finally rest in peace now.
Chloe: We did it, Marcus. We saved his home and his legacy.
Marcus: How are you feeling? Does your chest still hurt from the crash?
Chloe: For the first time in five years, I feel like I can breathe normally again.
Marcus smiled through his tears, pulling his sister into a warm, gentle hug. The heavy weight that had rested on their family for years was finally lifted away.
Marcus: The doctor said you can come home in two days, just in time for your birthday party.
Chloe: Home... it really is going to be our home again, isn't it?
Marcus: Yes, it is. The estate, the trust fund, and the house belong to you now.
Chloe turned her head toward the window, watching a pair of birds fly across the bright blue sky. She knew that tough days lay ahead in the courtrooms, but the truth was finally out in the open.
