The bright Texas sun poured through the massive arched windows of the grand Dallas ballroom. Soft classical music played in the background as wealthy guests walked around in expensive suits and designer gowns. Silver trays filled with tiny snacks moved through the crowd. Golden chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, throwing clean light onto the white marble floor. Everything looked peaceful and polite on the surface. But underneath the glittering lights, deep family jealousy was waiting to explode into public view.
Richard: Get away from me, kid!
A loud smack echoed across the room as Richard shoved small seven-year-old Lily backward. The little girl lost her balance instantly on the polished floor. Her shiny shoes slipped, and she fell hard onto the cold marble surface. Her pink party dress fluttered around her legs as her knees hit the ground with a sharp thud. A glass of orange juice tumbled from her small hand, spilling bright liquid across her skirt. The entire ballroom went completely silent as guests turned around in absolute shock.
Lily: Ouch! That hurt!
Lily burst into loud tears, clutching her left elbow while sitting on the cold floor. Freckles stood out clearly against her pale cheeks, which were turning bright red from shock and pain. Big tears rolled quickly down her face as she looked around at the ring of unfamiliar adult faces. Nobody stepped forward to help her. The wealthy patrons simply stared, too surprised to move or intervene. Richard stood over her, his dark eyes filled with fake anger as he straightened his black pinstripe tuxedo jacket.
Richard: That is what happens when you raise a thief!
Lily: I am not a thief!
Richard: You took my wife's diamond ring right off the display table!
Lily: I didn't take anything! I was just looking at the flowers!
Richard pointed his long index finger directly at the weeping girl on the ground. His face was twisted with rage, his jaw tight as he shouted for everyone to hear. He wanted to make sure every influential person in Dallas heard his harsh words. He wanted to embarrass her family beyond repair in front of the entire community.
Richard: Her mother taught her how to steal expensive things!
Lily: Mommy! Help me please!
From the far side of the ballroom, a flash of deep green silk moved through the crowd at top speed. Nora had heard her daughter's cry from across the room. She moved faster than anyone expected, her dark green off-shoulder dress sweeping across the shiny marble floor. Her fiery red hair bounced as she rushed past stunned businessmen and charity donors. She did not care about the high heels she was wearing or the expensive party rules. Her eyes were fixed entirely on her trembling child on the floor.
Nora: Get away from my baby!
Nora dropped directly onto her knees beside Lily, completely ignoring the spilt juice on the white marble. She pulled the crying seven-year-old into her arms, wrapping her silk gown around the small frame like a protective shield. She buried her face in Lily's hair, feeling the fast pounding of her daughter's scared little heart. Her own heart raced with a burning anger that she had never felt in her entire life.
Lily: Mommy! I didn't take it! I promise!
Nora: I know, sweetie. I know you didn't. Mommy is right here.
Lily: He pushed me real hard!
Nora: Shh, stay right behind me now.
Nora stood up in one fluid movement, her green gown rustling softly against the hard floor. Her eyes burned with fierce rage as she stared directly at the man standing above them. Richard was her late husband's older brother, a bitter man who had spent years fighting over family money and corporate titles. Now he had crossed a line that no mother would ever forgive. Nora did not pause to think about polite society or quiet legal battles anymore.
Nora: No!
Before Richard could step back, Nora reached out and grabbed his jaw firmly with her right hand. Her fingers dug tight into his skin, forcing his head to stay still under the bright daylight. Richard gasped in complete shock as her grip held him tight in place. The entire room gasped together. Nobody had ever grabbed a powerful Dallas businessman like that in public before. Nora brought her face inches away from his, her green eyes fixed on his dark pupils with terrifying strength.
Nora: Never touch my daughter again!
Richard: Let go of my face, Nora!
Nora: You touch her again and I will break you!
Richard: She is a thief, just like her mother!
Nora: You will apologize to her right now in front of everyone!
