The afternoon heat in Dallas was thick, but inside the sprawling estate, the high ceilings and polished marble floors kept everything feeling chilly. Mark walked down the quiet grand hallway with his leather dress shoes echoing against the walls. He had just finished a stressful business call with his company's board of directors, feeling tired after hours of heated talk about his late wife's estate. His late wife had passed away three years ago, leaving behind a massive trust fund for their seven-year-old daughter, Lily. Mark had spent every single day trying to balance running a major Dallas business while making sure Lily felt loved and safe in the big home. A year ago, he had met Victoria, a charming brunette woman who promised to bring warmth back into their quiet lives. They had married six months later in a grand ceremony, but things inside the home had slowly grown tense. Victoria seemed to dislike the time Mark spent with his young daughter, always finding subtle ways to push the child away.
Mark stopped near the center corridor when he heard a strange sound coming from the back patio glass doors. It was a faint, frantic thumping that sounded like small fists pounding against heavy glass. Mark turned around quickly and ran down the marble hallway, his dress shoe footsteps ringing wildly off the pristine walls. As he turned the corner past the large framed painting on the wall, his heart dropped straight into his stomach. Outside on the concrete patio, young Lily was standing in her light blue dress, jumping up and down with tears streaming down her red cheeks. She was crying hysterically, banging both of her hands on the heavy double pane glass door while looking into the hallway with wide, terrified eyes. Mark rushed toward the patio doors as fast as he could, his face pale with sudden panic. He reached the door and stared down at the black iron locking mechanism that had been turned tight from the inside.
Lily: Daddy! Let me in!
Mark grabbed the heavy black handle with trembling hands and twisted it sharply to force the door open. The metallic lock clanked loudly under his grip, and the heavy door finally swung outward into the warm breeze. Mark slammed the door wide open and ripped off his white suit jacket in absolute anger, flinging it down onto the floor without caring where it landed. Standing right inside the foyer behind him was Victoria, wearing a long white silk gown and holding a glass of iced tea with a calm, unbothered expression on her face. She did not even blink as Mark turned around to face her with his teeth clenching in fury.
Mark: Why was she locked outside?!
Victoria: She was being too loud, Mark. I needed some peace.
Mark: She is a child! It is ninety degrees out there!
Mark did not wait for another word from Victoria. He turned back around and dropped straight down to his knees on the cold marble floor near the open doorway. He threw his arms around little Lily, pulling her tight against his chest while she wept uncontrollably into his shoulder. The soft wind from the open patio blew through the doorway, fluttering Lily's fine blonde hair as she held onto her father's neck for dear life. Victoria did not say a word to comfort the weeping girl. Instead, she turned on her high heels and walked away down the hall, her silk gown rustling softly against the floor as if nothing serious had happened. Mark squeezed his eyes shut, rubbing his daughter's back while trying to calm his own racing heartbeat in the quiet hallway.
Lily: She locked the door on me, Daddy.
Mark: I am so sorry, sweetie. You are safe now.
Lily: She told me you do not care about me anymore. She said you only love her now!
Hearing those cruel words whispered from his crying daughter's lips made Mark's eyes snap wide open with terrifying rage. His jaw clenched tight enough to hurt, and his entire body went completely stiff with cold fury. He realized in that single second that Victoria was not just cold or strict, she was deliberately trying to hurt his child and break their bond. Mark smoothed Lily's hair and kissed her forehead before standing up slowly with a dangerous fire in his eyes. He reached into his leather briefcase sitting on the entryway table and pulled out the newly drafted estate document that Victoria had begged him to sign earlier that morning. It was a legal agreement that would have given Victoria direct control over Lily's trust fund in the event of Mark's death. With cold, steady hands, Mark gripped the thick white paper and tore it straight down the middle with a sharp, loud rip. He glared down the hallway where Victoria had walked, his forehead wet with sweat under the high lights.
Mark: I am done with you.
