Mr. Henderson put his hand gently on my shoulder, assuring me that my job was entirely safe and that the hotel would be covering a full paid vacation for both me and Lily to make up for the horrific ordeal we had suffered. Lily looked up at me with bright, happy eyes, the tears finally dried on her glowing cheeks. She squeezed my hand tightly, leaning her small head against my hip.
Lily: Mommy, you were so brave!
Mother: Nobody gets to hurt my sweet girl, ever. I will always stand up for you.
Lily: Can we go home now and eat ice cream?
Mother: We sure can, sweetheart. As much as you want.
We walked out of the luxury ballroom together, holding hands under the warm lights of the hotel lobby. I felt a tremendous sense of relief and pride washing over me. Money and influence could buy a lot of things in this world, but it could never buy real dignity, integrity, or the fierce love of a mother protecting her child. As we stepped out into the crisp evening air, I knew that my daughter would grow up knowing her own worth, fully aware that no matter how powerful someone might seem, truth and love will always triumph over arrogance.
