Within seconds, two burly hotel security officers came rushing into the ballroom, flanked by the general manager, Mr. Henderson. Arthur scrambled back up to his feet, his face red with rage and humiliation as he gestured wildly toward me with a shaking hand.
Arthur: Arrest this woman immediately! She slapped me in front of everyone! And her daughter stole my fifty-thousand-dollar watch!
Mr. Henderson: Mr. Pendelton, please calm down. We need to handle this quietly.
Arthur: Quietly? Look at my face! Call the police! I want both of them in jail tonight! I will file a massive lawsuit against this whole hotel!
I stood my ground, my hands resting protective on Lily's shoulders as she hid behind my gown. I looked Mr. Henderson straight in the eye with unwavering determination. I told him that before anyone called the police, we were going to review the security footage from the high-definition cameras mounted directly above the VIP section. I knew the hotel had installed top-tier security systems just two months prior. Mr. Henderson hesitated for a moment, looking at Arthur's furious expression, but the weight of the situation forced his hand. He agreed to pull up the live footage on the manager's tablet right there in front of everyone.
The guests pressed closer in a tight circle, eager to see how the dramatic scene would unfold. Mr. Henderson pulled out his tablet, tapped the screen a few times, and selected the camera angle overlooking Arthur's table from ten minutes prior. He hit play and turned the screen so Arthur, his lawyers, and the surrounding crowd could clearly see the recording. The video showed Arthur sitting at his table, drinking scotch and laughing heartily with his business associates. Lily was nowhere near him on the screen yet.
As the video played forward, everyone watched in stunned silence as Arthur pulled his gold watch out of his pocket to check the time. But his fingers were slippery from the glass of ice water he had been holding. The watch slipped right through his slick grip, sliding down between the thick leather seat cushion and the back frame of his luxury armchair. A second later, Lily twirled into the frame several feet away from his table, completely innocent and never once coming within arm's reach of Arthur or his belongings.
