The Car By The Bridge

A Torn Shirt And A Gold Watch Reveal Everything Today

The summer heat beat down on the black asphalt as they walked fast together.

Eleanor pulled off her high heels and ran barefoot along the dusty gravel path.

She did not care about her gold gown getting dirty at the bottom hem.

Her only thought was finding the woman waiting down by the old bridge.

The little boy held her hand tightly while trying to keep up with her.

Boy: It is just past those tall oak trees near the river bank.

Eleanor: Is your mommy okay in that car, sweetheart?

Boy: She was very tired and told me to run fast to you.

They rounded the corner and saw an old beat-up white sedan parked underground.

The rusty vehicle sat under the shadow of the large stone highway bridge structure.

Eleanor ran up to the passenger window and knocked hard on the glass.

Inside sat a pale woman with dark hair dressed in very simple worn clothes.

The woman turned her head slowly and gasped when she saw Eleanor's face.

She unlocked the old car door with a heavy metallic clinking sound from inside.

Eleanor pulled the door open and dropped to her knees in the dirt.

Clara: Eleanor... you actually came for him like I hoped you would.

Eleanor: Clara? You were my sweet nurse at the city hospital back then!

Clara: Arthur paid two men to take your baby away that dark night.

Eleanor: My baby girl... where is my daughter right now, Clara?

Clara: I raised her as my own daughter in secret to protect her.

Clara pointed toward the backseat of the old dusty white car behind her.

A young girl with Eleanor's exact bright green eyes sat up slowly from sleep.
