The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the concrete pavement of Camp Valor.
Private Maya Lin adjusted the heavy duffel bag slung over her shoulder as she walked toward the main barracks.
She was twenty-four years old and smaller than most of the recruits in her unit.
Her quiet demeanor often led people to make incorrect assumptions about her physical strength.
She had joined the military to honor her late father who served honorably for twenty years.
Now she stood outside the elite hand-to-hand combat facility on her very first morning.
The air inside the main hallway smelled strongly of floor wax and fresh canvas mats.
Large American flags hung proudly along the bright white walls under the overhead lights.
A group of veteran soldiers stood near the ring laughing and telling loud stories.
At the center of the group stood Sergeant Frank Miller, a massive man with broad shoulders.
Miller was known across the base for his aggressive fighting style and merciless attitude.
He noticed Maya walking into the facility and immediately stopped his conversation with his buddies.
A slow smirk spread across his face as he watched the new recruit set her bag down.
"Look what the transport bus dropped off today, boys," Miller called out in a loud voice.
The other soldiers turned around and chuckled nervously at his cruel joke.
Maya ignored the comment completely and walked over to the supply rack to grab her gear.
She knew that responding to bullies only gave them the attention they desperately wanted.
However, Sergeant Miller was not accustomed to being ignored by anyone on his base.
He stepped directly into her path, blocking her way to the gear lockers.
"When a superior officer speaks to you, rookie, you look him in the eye," Miller sneered.
"Good morning, Sergeant," Maya said calmly without showing any sign of fear.
"You think you belong in an elite unit like this?" Miller asked while leaning down closer.
"I earned my spot here just like everyone else," Maya replied smoothly.
The sergeant laughed loudly and tapped his thick chest with a heavy fist.
"We'll see if you really earned it during the open sparring session today," he warned.
Maya folded her arms neatly across her chest and stared right back at him.
"I look forward to the demonstration, sir," she answered with a cold steady voice.
Miller shook his head in disbelief before turning back toward his group of followers.
The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a combat knife.
Everyone present knew that the morning training session was going to be brutal.
