Voices in the Living Room

A Mother Stood Her Ground When Her Family Came Apart

The morning light broke through the thick gray clouds outside.

Mark was getting dressed in his sharp navy suit for work.

He remembered his promise to speak with his mother that morning.

He walked down the stairs into the sunlit dining room area.

Evelyn was sitting at the table sipping her black coffee quietly.

Mark: Good morning, Mom, do you have a moment to talk?

Evelyn: Good morning, Mark, of course I have time for you.

Mark: Sarah was very upset about your conversation yesterday.

Evelyn: She is far too sensitive about everything I say to her.

Mark: Mom, you need to respect her as the mother here.

Evelyn: I am only trying to guide her properly, Mark.

Mark: This is our home, and Sarah makes the decisions for Leo.

Evelyn: You are letting her control you far too much, son.

Mark's face flushed red with sudden frustration at her tone.

He realized that his mother had no intention of changing her ways.

She did not respect Sarah or their marriage boundaries at all.

Mark: If you cannot respect my wife, you cannot stay here.

Evelyn: How could you choose her over your own mother?

Mark: Sarah is my wife and the mother of my child.

Evelyn: I gave up everything to raise you into a man!

Mark: And I appreciate that, but my family comes first now.

Evelyn set her coffee cup down with a sharp clinking sound.

She glared at her son with cold, bitter disappointment.

Mark looked at his watch and realized he was late for his meeting.

He needed to head to the downtown bank branch right away.

Mark: We will finish this discussion when I return tonight.

Evelyn: Do not expect me to apologize for caring about you.

Mark grabbed his leather bag and left through the front door.

The heavy oak door slammed shut behind him with a loud thud.

Sarah came down the stairs holding little Leo in her arms.

She had heard parts of the tense conversation from upstairs.

Evelyn turned her angry gaze straight toward Sarah near the stairs.

Evelyn: You put him up to this, didn't you, Sarah?

Sarah: Mark spoke to you because your behavior is unacceptable.

Evelyn: You are turning my own son against his mother!

Sarah: I am protecting my family and my peace, Evelyn.

Evelyn stood up from the table with a cold frown.

She walked past Sarah without saying another single word.

Sarah felt a cold shiver run down her entire spine.

The atmosphere in the house had become dangerously hostile now.

She held her baby tighter against her soft fleece sweater.

She knew she had to remain strong and vigilant all day.
