The loud wailing of the car alarm continued to scream across the bright suburban parking lot. Passersby began to slow down their vehicles, pointing toward the shattered rear window and the broken glass scattered everywhere. Sarah remained on her knees near the open door, sheltering both of her children with her own body. She rocked baby Lily gently back and forth while holding Toby tightly against her side. The fear in her heart slowly began to transform into a burning white-hot anger that filled her chest.
Rapid footsteps sounded against the hot pavement behind her. A man wearing an expensive tailored suit rushed into the scene, his leather shoes clicking loudly. Marcus stopped dead in his tracks as he looked at the ruined window of his prized luxury SUV. His face turned pale before flushing deep red with sudden arrogance and anger. He did not look at his pale children or his bleeding wife. Instead, his eyes remained fixed on the broken glass covering the leather seats.
Marcus: What the hell did you do to my brand new car, Sarah?
Sarah: Are you seriously asking me about your stupid car right now?
Marcus: Do you have any idea how much this vehicle costs to repair?
Sarah stood up slowly from the pavement, holding the baby securely in her left arm while keeping Toby behind her dress. Her eyes locked onto Marcus with intense rage. Marcus stepped closer, waving his hands wildly as if he was the victim of a terrible crime. He reached out toward the broken door frame, groaning about his insurance policy and the hassle of going to a auto shop.
Marcus: You totally ruined the leather! You could have just called my phone!
Sarah: You locked our young children inside a hot box under the sun!
Marcus: I only went inside the coffee shop for a quick moment! They were fine!
The sheer arrogance of his words snapped whatever composure Sarah had left in her body. She stepped forward directly into his space beneath the towering flagpole. Her right hand flew forward with incredible speed. A loud crack echoed through the air as her open palm slammed hard against Marcus's left cheek. His head snapped back in total shock. Before he could recover his balance, Sarah struck him a second time across the same spot with even greater force.
Marcus: Hey! What is wrong with you? Stop touching me!
Sarah: You left them here to die while you drank coffee!
Without hesitating for a single second, Sarah delivered a third crushing slap across his face. Marcus groaned loudly and stumbled backward over his own feet. He fell onto the hard pavement on his hip, clutching his bright red, bruised cheek in total disbelief. The surrounding crowd of onlookers gasped at the dramatic scene unfolding under the bright daylight. Marcus looked up at his wife from the floor, his eyes wide with fear and confusion.
Marcus: You are crazy, Sarah! I am going to call the police on you!
Sarah: Call them! Tell them how you abandoned your own baby for a drink!
Marcus: It was an honest mistake! You are overreacting like always!
Sarah: You will never see these kids ever again! Do you hear me?
Her booming female shout echoed off the brick walls of the nearby stores. Marcus cowered slightly under her furious glare, holding his face as the pain radiated through his jaw. Toby squeezed his mother's yellow dress, looking down at his father with a mix of fear and sadness. The line had been drawn permanently in the dust, and there was no turning back for any of them.
