The Lock On The Door

A Mother Smashes Car Window To Save Her Trapped Children

The bright summer heat was beating down on the suburban shopping center parking lot. The concrete felt hot enough to burn through the soles of anyone's shoes. Sarah stepped out of the grocery store holding two paper bags filled with simple dinner ingredients. She adjusted her yellow dress under the brilliant sunshine and scanned the crowded parking spaces. A large American flag flapped gently on a tall steel pole near the entrance. She expected to see her husband Marcus waiting in the air-conditioned driver seat of his new luxury SUV. Instead, the vehicle sat silent with the engine turned off completely under the blinding sun.

Sarah walked faster toward the black SUV with a strange knot forming deep in her stomach. She approached the passenger side and looked through the dark tinted glass. Inside the heavy doors, her six-year-old son Toby was sitting slumped over in his car seat. Next to him, wrapped tightly in a thick purple knitted blanket, was three-month-old baby Lily. The infant was completely still and her cheeks looked bright red. Sarah dropped the grocery bags onto the pavement, spilling cans and apples across the hot ground without caring.

Sarah: Marcus! Open this door right now! Where are you?

She yanked on the door handle with all her strength, but the electronic lock did not budge. The heavy doors were sealed shut, keeping the burning heat trapped inside the small cabin. Sarah banged her open palms against the thick glass repeatedly. Toby did not move or open his eyes. The glass felt alarmingly hot beneath her fingertips. A sudden wave of intense terror swept over Sarah, making her chest feel tight and dry.

Sarah: Somebody help me! My kids are trapped in this car!

She looked around the busy parking lot frantically, but people were too far away to hear her voice over the traffic. She ran around to the rear trunk of the nearby maintenance truck parked nearby. Resting near a pile of orange road cones was a massive iron tire tool. Sarah grabbed the cold iron bar with both hands, her knuckles turning completely white. She turned back toward her husband's sleek vehicle with absolute determination in her mind.

Sarah: Hold on baby, mommy is coming to get you out!

Sarah raised the heavy metal tire iron high over her shoulder. She swung it down with every ounce of physical power in her body. The heavy metal crashed directly into the rear side window. Glass shattered in a violent explosion of tiny dark fragments across the pavement. The security alarm of the SUV immediately began to wail loudly, echoing across the entire neighborhood. Sarah reached her arm straight through the broken window frame without caring about the sharp edges cutting into her skin.

She reached inside and flipped the manual door lock button from the interior panel. The heavy back door clicked open with a metallic pop. Sarah threw the door wide open and leaned inside the stifling interior. The air inside felt like a burning oven against her skin. She unbuckled Toby's harness with trembling fingers while gasping for cool air under the bright sky. She gently lifted baby Lily off the leather seat, holding the small purple bundle close to her pounding heart.

Toby: Mommy... she is still breathing... I tried to wake her up.

Sarah: Oh thank God! I am so sorry my sweet boys, mommy has you now.

Toby opened his tired eyes slowly and blinked against the bright daylight. He had tiny red scratches on his pale cheek from the heat, but his breath was steady. Sarah pulled both of her children tightly into her arms right there on the pavement under the floating flag. Her eyes overflowed with warm tears of relief as she pressed her lips against her daughter's sweaty forehead. The baby gave a tiny whimper and began to move her small hands.
