Victoria backed up against the large staircase, looking around the room frantically for anyone who would take her side or offer help. The guests stepped back away from her, leaving her standing entirely alone near the bottom step with her red cheek and ruined dress. The butler immediately stepped forward, removing his white gloves and setting his keys down on the hall table with a look of pure disgust on his face.
Butler: Sir, I will call the county police right now to report this crime.
Richard: Do it immediately, and tell them to bring a detective who handles grand fraud and child endangerment.
Victoria: Richard, please listen to me! I did everything because I loved you! She was holding you back from real success and social standing!
Claire: You did not love anyone but yourself and the money you could steal from this estate.
Claire stepped forward, taking Leo's small hand into her own clean, warm hand as her sister Sarah stood firmly by her side. For three long years, Claire had cleaned the floors of her own home while watching another woman live her life and raise her child. But now, standing tall in her simple maid's uniform, she possessed more dignity and power than Victoria ever could buy with all her stolen riches.
Leo: Mommy, are you staying with us now? Are you coming back upstairs to my room?
Claire: Yes, my sweet angel. I am never leaving your side ever again. Nobody can force us apart now.
Richard: Claire... can you ever forgive me for being so blind to what was happening right under my own nose?
Claire: We have a very long road ahead of us, Richard. But right now, my only focus is taking care of our son and restoring his rights.
Two uniformed police officers entered through the open front doors, their heavy boots making sharp sounds against the hardwood oak floor. The probate judge stepped toward the officers immediately, pointing his finger toward Victoria and handing them the certified folder of financial evidence. The officers moved quickly, grabbing Victoria's arms and wrapping her wrists in steel handcuffs while reading her rights in front of all sixty wealthy guests.
Victoria: Unhand me! You have no right to treat me like a common criminal! My attorney will have all of your jobs for this!
Police Officer: You have the right to remain silent, ma'am. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
The guests watched in stunned silence as the once-proud stepmother was led out the front doors of the mansion into a waiting police cruiser. Her sparkling gold dress caught the late afternoon sun one last time before the vehicle door slammed shut behind her.
