The Secret Under the Stairs

A Little Girl Kept Leaving Food Beside the Sealed Door

David felt as though the floor beneath his boots had suddenly given way into a deep dark void.

He stared at the small face in the shadows, his mind struggling to understand the words just spoken.

He had never seen this child before in his entire life, yet the child spoke with absolute certainty and trust.

Sarah gasped loudly behind him, clapping both hands over her mouth as tears welled in her bright blue eyes.

Sarah: David... what did that child just call you?

David: I don't know, Sarah!

David: I swear to you, I have no idea who this child is!

David carefully reached into the narrow dark space and gently lifted the frail body out into the daylight.

The child was surprisingly light, like a bundle of dry leaves, with thin wrists and soft messy brown hair.

As the hallway lights hit the child's face, David noticed a faint silver birthmark right behind the left earlobe.

David's breath caught in his throat as a memory from five years ago flashed vividly through his mind.

His younger brother, Michael, had passed away tragically in an automobile accident five years prior to this day.

Before his death, Michael had been involved in a complex relationship that the rest of the family disliked greatly.

When Michael died, his girlfriend disappeared without a trace, carrying a secret that no one ever uncovered fully.

David looked closely at the child's face, seeing his late brother's features staring right back at him clearly.

David: You're Michael's child...

David: You're Leo, aren't you?

The little child nodded slowly, wiping tears away from his dusty cheeks with the back of his oversized sleeve.

Leo: Mommy said if I stayed quiet, Uncle David would come find me when the bad man went away.

Sarah: Oh my goodness, David!

Sarah: Who put him in our house without us knowing?

David stood up quickly, sweeping his gaze across the large living area and the long hallways of the estate.

Their home was over six thousand square feet, with guest rooms and service areas that were rarely used daily.

Someone who knew the layout of the home had brought the boy inside and hidden him behind that wall.

David: Emily, come here right now.

David: How long has he been in that room?

Emily: Three days, Daddy.

Emily: A lady brought him through the back garden door when you were at work on Tuesday morning.
