Voices in the Darkness

A Little Girl Kept Leaving Food Beside the Sealed Door

David leaned his ear against the cold white paint of the interior frame and held his breath to listen.

At first, all he heard was the quiet hum of the central air conditioning running through the ceiling vents.

Then he heard a soft rustling sound, like paper or plastic bags being moved around in a small dark place.

David looked at Sarah, whose face had completely lost all of its natural color in a matter of seconds.

David: Step back, Sarah.

David: Take Emily into the living room right now.

Sarah: David, what is in there?

David: Just step back and let me check it.

Emily shook her head violently and grabbed David's arm with her tiny, warm, trembling fingers.

Emily: No, Daddy, don't hurt him!

Emily: He's nice, but he is scared of the dark!

David gently moved Emily behind him and placed his fingers under the decorative brass handle of the paneling.

The door was locked from the outside with an old key latch that had been painted over multiple times.

David grabbed a heavy screwdriver from the kitchen drawer and pried the metal latch open with raw force.

The metal popped loudly, echoing off the high white columns of the spacious entrance hall with a sharp ring.

A cool draught of air rushed out from the dark gap, carrying the faint smell of dust and damp cardboard.

David pulled the narrow door open a few inches, peering directly into the shadows of the tiny hidden chamber.

Inside the cramped space beneath the steps sat a tiny figure huddled over a pile of worn woolen blankets.

The light from the hallway spilled across the dusty floor, revealing a pair of wide, frightened brown eyes staring up.

David froze in place, his mind racing as he tried to process what his eyes were looking at.

It was a young child, small and thin, wearing oversized grey clothes covered in dust and wrinkles.

The child was holding a small plastic water bottle tight against their chest like a protective shield against danger.

David: Please don't be afraid!

David: I am right here and I will protect you!

The child pulled the blanket higher up to their chin, trembling violently in the cool air of the house.

David reached out a steady hand into the dark opening, keeping his voice as calm and soft as possible.

David: Tell me who locked you inside here!

The small child looked up into the bright daylight of the hallway with tear-filled eyes that sparkled softly.

The child reached out a small, trembling hand, pressing dirty fingers against David's stubbled jawline softly.

Trapped Child: Daddy, you finally came to save me!
