David walked into the bright marble entrance of the massive city house.
He carried a big bunch of red flowers in his right hand.
The sunlight shone through the giant glass windows near the main street.
He was meeting his old friend for a quiet afternoon talk.
Suddenly he heard quick footsteps running across the slick floor.
A little girl ran straight toward him with tears on her cheeks.
She was barefoot on one side and held a tiny shoe.
Emily: Please... save my mom!
David stopped in his tracks and looked down at the child.
Her small dark dress was wrinkled near the waist line.
David: What happened?
The little girl grabbed the edge of his black coat tightly.
Her whole body shook as she pointed toward the hallway.
Emily: That pretty lady hurt my mom!
David clenched his jaw as his pulse began to race fast.
He set the red flowers gently on the cold floor.
The bouquet rested right beside the small white leather shoe.
David: Where is she?
The child pointed toward a tall wooden door down the corridor.
David told the girl to stay near the big front door.
He walked quickly toward the quiet rooms at the back.
His shoes made firm sounds against the white marble tiles.
He heard tense raised voices coming from behind the heavy wood.
Sarah: Please... just don't touch Emily!
Victoria: And stop pretending you have a choice.
David pushed the heavy wooden door open with sudden force.
The hinges made a sharp sound in the bright quiet room.
Two women turned their heads around toward the open doorway instantly.
David: What exactly doesn't she have a choice about?!
The taller woman stepped back in absolute shock and surprise.
Her eyes went wide as she recognized David standing right there.
Sarah was standing near the window with red tear marks on her face.
She held a bundle of paper documents tightly against her chest.
Victoria folded her arms and tried to regain her calm posture.
Victoria: This is private family business that does not concern you.
David: Anything involving a scared child concerns me right now.
Sarah wiped her cheek with the back of her trembling hand.
She looked at David with a mix of fear and relief.
Sarah: She wants me to sign away the family home today.
Victoria: She signed an agreement years ago when the mortgage was made.
David: That paper is not valid if you used force or threats.
Victoria glared at David with cold anger in her posture.
She stepped closer to the wooden table near the far wall.
Victoria: You have no legal standing to enter this house today.
David: I have every right to protect a defenseless mother and child.
The room became completely quiet for a few tense seconds.
Outside the window the city traffic moved along the busy street.
Inside the room three people stood in a firm standoff.
David stepped directly between Sarah and the older stepmother.
He saw the clear panic in Sarah's pale brown eyes.
He knew he had to stay calm to fix this situation.
Sarah: She took my phone so I could not call anyone.
David: Give her phone back to her right this second.
Victoria laughed softly and shook her head with clear disdain.
Victoria: You do not make the rules in this mansion, David.
David reached into his pocket and pulled out his own cell phone.
He tapped the screen to dial his family trust lawyer immediately.
David: Let us see what the legal authorities say about this act.
Victoria's face turned pale as the reality hit her hard.
She took a step backward toward the wooden writing desk.
The little girl peeked around the doorframe with wide nervous eyes.
David looked back at the door and gave a soft warm smile.
He knew the truth was finally starting to come out clearly.
