A loud heavy knock suddenly rattled the thick front door of the suburban home.
Sarah jumped up from the kitchen stool with a sudden sharp gasp of sheer horror.
"That is them! They have been following my movements all morning long!" Sarah panicked loudly.
Mark set Lily down on the living room sofa next to young Ethan gently.
"Stay right here with your sister, Ethan," Mark instructed his brave son clearly.
Ethan nodded his head firmly and placed a protective arm over Lily's tiny shoulders.
Mark walked toward the front hallway with determination filling every single slow step.
He opened the solid oak door to find two tall men standing in dark suits on the porch.
The older man pulled a gold-embossed business card out from his sleek jacket pocket.
"Good morning, Mr. Davis. We are looking for a lost child belonging to the Vance estate," the man said.
"You are standing on private property without a valid warrant," Mark replied with a cold voice.
"We have reason to believe your wife brought the child here yesterday evening," the investigator stated.
"My family business has nothing to do with your corporate clients," Mark stated clearly.
"If you do not step aside, we will involve state law enforcement officers immediately," the man warned.
Mark pulled out his personal smartphone and tapped the screen with complete confidence.
"I am already on the line with the regional police department manager," Mark announced out loud.
"I am reporting two unidentified men trespassing on my personal residential property right now," Mark added.
The two investigators exchanged a quick tense glance before stepping back toward their car.
"This matter will be resolved in probate court within the hour," the leader warned sternly.
They turned around and walked briskly down the long concrete driveway toward a black SUV.
Mark closed the front door firmly and turned around to face his shaken wife.
Sarah stood in the hallway with tears streaming freely down both her pale cheeks.
"We need to get to the downtown courthouse right now," Mark declared with firm strength.
"Are you going to bring Lily straight to her biological mother?" Sarah asked in a whisper.
"I am going to make sure my daughter is safe forever," Mark answered without hesitation.
He knew that his marriage to Sarah had changed permanently in that single morning.
Yet his duty as a protective father was absolute and clear above everything else.
