Sarah slowly sat down on a high wooden barstool beside the kitchen island counter.
She buried her face in her hands for several long seconds before speaking up clearly.
"Clara did not abandon you four years ago like everyone thought back then," Sarah admitted.
Mark felt his heart skip a beat as he squeezed small Lily close to his side.
"What do you mean she didn't abandon me?" Mark asked in a stern tone.
"Clara's wealthy family placed her into a private medical facility in another state," Sarah explained.
"They wanted total control over her family trust fund and estate distribution," she added quietly.
Mark stared at his wife with complete disbelief washing over his entire mind.
"How do you know all these deep details about Clara's personal family business?" Mark asked.
"Because my cousin works as a probate lawyer for Clara's wealthy uncle," Sarah revealed whispered.
Mark stood up straight while holding small Lily safely in his strong arms.
"You knew where Clara was this entire time while we were dating?" Mark yelled out loud.
"I found out right before our wedding ceremony two full years ago," Sarah confessed softly.
"I was terrified that if you knew the truth, you would leave me immediately," she cried.
Mark felt a deep wave of disappointment crush his emotional trust in his wife entirely.
He had built an entire life based on what now appeared to be complete deceit.
"Why is Lily here in our house right now inside that wall compartment?" Mark asked.
"Clara escaped from that private facility two days ago with legal help," Sarah explained frantically.
"Her legal team filed a massive lawsuit against her family to regain custody," Sarah stated.
"Clara brought Lily to my office yesterday because she knew I was married to you," Sarah said.
"She begged me to keep Lily safe until the emergency court hearing this morning," Sarah added.
Mark shook his head in absolute confusion as he processed every single shocking piece of information.
"If Clara asked you to protect her, why hide her like a secret?" Mark demanded.
"Clara's uncle sent private investigator guards looking for the girl all night long," Sarah explained.
"I panicked when those men parked outside our house at three in the morning," Sarah wept.
"I put Lily in the converted service closet so nobody would find her during a search," Sarah said.
Mark looked down at small Lily, who was holding Ethan's hand very tightly now.
The entire situation was far more complicated and dangerous than he had ever imagined before.
