Daniel turned away from Victoria and walked directly to the massive steel vault wheel.
He grabbed the thick chrome handles with both hands, bracing his boots on marble.
With a heavy grunt, he forced the giant locking wheel to rotate counterclockwise.
The internal gears groaned loudly, echoing metallic clicks through the quiet mansion walls.
Heavy steel bolts slid back out of the door frame one by one.
Daniel pulled with all his weight, slowly swinging the massive iron door open.
A cold draft of air rushed out from inside the dark, windowless chamber.
A single overhead light beam shone down into the center of the room.
Kneeling under the bright light was an elderly woman with pale skin and grey hair.
She looked up slowly, shielding her weak eyes from the sudden hallway glare.
"My son... you found me," Margaret whispered in a weak, trembling voice.
Daniel gasped as his heart dropped into his stomach at the terrible sight.
It was his mother, whom Victoria claimed had left town weeks ago for vacation.
Margaret had been locked away inside the dark room without her medication.
Daniel rushed inside the vault and wrapped his strong arms around his mother.
"Mom! Oh God, Mom, I'm so sorry!" Daniel cried out, tears filling his eyes.
He helped her stand up slowly, supporting her fragile body with his arms.
Margaret rested her head on his shoulder, weeping with quiet relief.
"I knew Leo would find a way to tell you," Margaret murmured softly.
Daniel guided his mother out of the dark space and into the light.
Leo ran over and hugged his grandmother's knees, wiping away his own tears.
Daniel turned his head slowly toward the hallway where Victoria was still standing.
His eyes were wide with a mix of utter shock and boiling rage.
Victoria backed away until her shoulders hit the wall near the flag.
"Daniel, wait! It was not what you think!" Victoria stammered frantically.
