The history of the Vance family was built on millions of dollars, hard work, and deep betrayals. Clara's mother, Evelyn Vance, had been a powerful CEO who built a giant medical supply company from the ground up. She had owned the grand mansion, the surrounding land, and an eighteen million dollar personal trust fund. But five years ago, Evelyn had married a charming widower named Richard, who brought his grown son Julian into the home. For years, Julian and his father lived a life of total luxury funded by Evelyn's massive fortune. When Evelyn fell mysteriously ill six months ago and was declared dead by her personal physician, Richard and Julian assumed they would immediately take full control of the entire estate, including the trust fund and the family business.
However, Evelyn's final will had contained a strict legal clause. The entire eighteen million dollar trust fund was set to be held in a secure trust managed by a high-profile divorce lawyer and estate trustee. The money could only be transferred if both Clara and Julian signed the final settlement documents together on Clara's twenty-fifth birthday. That day was today. Julian had planned everything carefully to make sure Clara would never sign those papers or claim her rightful half of her mother's vast wealth. He had secretly moved Clara's emergency Epipen out of her bag and hidden it inside the locked desk drawer earlier that morning, knowing she would soon suffer an allergic reaction from the poisoned snacks he served her.
Julian: Look at you, sitting in that stupid wheelchair for months, thinking you were going to inherit my father's house.
Clara: It was never... your father's house... my mother owned... everything...
Julian: Your mother was weak! She trusted the wrong people, just like you did today! The moment the bank cleared my trustee access, I was supposed to be on a private jet to Europe!
Clara: Why... did you freeze... the accounts?
Julian: I didn't freeze them! Someone triggered a federal fraud alert on the main corporate account five minutes ago! The bank locked down every single dollar attached to the Vance estate! Who did you call while I was out of the room?
Julian grabbed Clara by her sweater shoulders and shook her roughly, trying to force an answer out of her. Clara could barely lift her head. Her lips were turning blue, and her chest moved in short, painful gasps. She looked at the desk drawer again, her hand trembling as it rested on the dark wood floor. She knew she only had a few minutes of consciousness left before her airway closed completely. Julian stood back up, rubbing his forehead in extreme stress as his mind raced to figure out how to unlock the frozen bank accounts before the federal authorities started asking questions about his wire transfers.
Julian: If the bank doesn't release those funds by five o'clock today, the mortgage on my offshore properties will go into foreclosure! I put up three million dollars as collateral for a private loan!
Clara: Help me... and I will... sign whatever you want...
Julian: It's too late for signatures now, Clara! The accounts are completely locked down by a court order! A legal hold means someone filed an emergency lawsuit against the estate!
Clara: Please... Julian... I can't... breathe...
Julian looked down at her with a dark, calculating expression on his face. He realized that if Clara survived this afternoon, she would tell the police that he had deliberately withheld her life-saving medicine while she suffered a severe allergic reaction. That would mean an immediate criminal investigation, loss of his trust fund rights, and long years in a federal prison. On the other hand, if she slipped into a coma or passed away from her known severe allergy, he could claim it was a terrible accident while he was out of the room searching for her medicine. He stepped back toward the bay window, intentionally putting more distance between himself and the suffering young woman on the floor.
